Rangers agree to terms with free agent forwards Gregg McKegg and Danny O’Regan

The Rangers aren’t done yet, agreeing to terms with forwards Gregg McKegg and Danny O’Regan. McKegg, 27, spent last season with the Carolina Hurricanes/Charlotte Checkers. He put up 6-5-11 in 41 games with the Canes, and 6-17-23 in 31 games with the Checkers. The 6′, 200 lb lefty center is likely insurance/depth at the NHL level, possibly a good candidate for 13/14F.

O’Regan, 25, has spent most of his three year career in the AHL, amassing just 25 NHL games (1-4-5). Last year with Rochester, he put up 20-28-48 in 70 games. O’Regan is likely Hartford bound to help the transformation of the AHL club. O’Regan spent time with David Quinn at BU, for what it’s worth.

This seems like peanuts in comparison to the Artemi Panarin signing, but don’t discount how important it is to have a strong Hartford club with a good culture. That was John Davidson’s priority when he got here. While I know nothing of McKegg and O’Regan, my guess is they were vetted properly and will help instill a good environment with the kids in the AHL.

"Rangers agree to terms with free agent forwards Gregg McKegg and Danny O'Regan", 5 out of 5 based on 12 ratings.

It’s signings like this, where little is known of the player, or how he fits in, that one needs to rely on Management. So far, JG seems to be doing quite well, so I give him the benefit of the doubt here.

Translation – cheap to keep! Moves on the top club are coming, but Gorton wants to make sure he has the depth he needs in case he needs to pull up a player or two from Hartford. We also have so many kids with a shot of making the team out of camp, someone is likely to have some off days or get injured. Insurance is important.

Fresh blood at Hartford to help wash the stink away from the last few years is never a bad thing.

McKegg could make the big club as an addition Brendan Lemieux / net-driver type. He’s not nearly as good as Lemieux, but he is annoying to play against.

Hopefully they are difficult to play against. I see our roster as too soft. And soft doesn’t win in the playoffs.
