Canucks do Rangers a solid, buyout Ryan Spooner

The Canucks have bought out Ryan Spooner. Since the Rangers retained salary in the initial trade to the Oilers, the buyout impacts the Rangers in a few different ways.

• The Rangers now have $600,000 extra cap space to work with this year. It doesn’t seem like much, but every dollar matters when considering Artemi Panarin.
• The Rangers now get that extra retained contract trade back. Before the buyout, the Spooner trade counted as one of the three allowed. This now comes off the books and the Rangers can now retain salary on three trades instead of two.
• The Rangers also have $300,000 in dead cap space in the 2020-2021 season. That’s relatively low impact.
