Top Rangers Play Bracket: (5) Gaborik 3OT Winner vs. (12) Hank stops Briere

The next matchup in our top play bracket has the chance to be the first upset. Marian Gaborik’s triple OT winner against Washington was the first real OT winner we remember from the 2011-2017 era. It’s only a #5 seed because it wasn’t done at MSG, and it just doesn’t have that goosebumps feel.

Henrik Lundqvist stopping Danny Briere’s penalty shot didn’t have any real value in the grand scheme of things, but it was the Winter Classic. It was the Flyers. It was when the Winter Classic and outdoor hockey wasn’t watered down. It solidified the first of many outdoor wins.

Upvote for the higher seed (5 seed is higher than 12 seed, etc) and downvote for lower seed. Voting ends tomorrow at noon.

Hard to compare a playoff 3OT goal to a penalty shot in the middle of the season. Sure, the setting was nice for Hank’s quality save but anything positive in a 3OT playoff game is going to trump it.

    Is Hank on here voting?

This is a tough one. I was at the winter classic and back then outdoor games were still something special before the greedy NHL saturated the idea with the stadium series. Honestly nothing was better than going to Philadelphia and rallying from down 0-2 to take the lead in the third and then have everything on the line for the penalty shot. The Road to the Winter Classic gave us a behind the scenes view of these teams that was highlighted by the cosmonaut fiasco. This is probably Hanks most famous save but the stakes don’t compare to something like Richters save on Bure because this wasn’t in the playoffs.

My heart says Hanks save but my head says Gaboriks goal. I still remember staying up until 1 something in the morning and going nuts in my apartment when he buried that goal.

I have to go with Gaboriks goal.

That save felt humongous big but I still have to give this to gabby, 3OT goals are rare and special things
