Top Rangers Play Bracket: Stepan Winner (1) vs. Callahan’s shift vs Winnipeg (16)

The first round is upon us in the Best Ranger Play Tournament. The first matchup is the perceived favorite: Derek Stepan’s OT winner against Washington, taking on Ryan Callahan’s monster shift against Winnipeg. For those who forgot, that was the shift where Cally, without a stick, blocked a pair of shots and laid two hits before changing. It’s one of those blue collar plays that we love to talk about.

(1) Derek Stepan OT Winner vs Washington

(16) Ryan Callahan shift vs Winnipeg

Upvote for the higher seed (1 seed is higher than 16 seed, etc) and downvote for lower seed. Voting ends tomorrow at noon.

Sure, there was a lot on the line, but Stepan’s goal wasn’t an overly skilled play. He was in the right place at the right time. And I definitely wouldn’t call that a bullet of a shot. Cally’s shift gave me goosebumps. That guy is all heart. Selfless.( except when negotiating contracts )
Made me miss having a player like that on the team.

I’m assuming Dave is just a Stepan fan so he likes to boast that play CBS, NBC and even Vally from MSG talked about how Fast was the true player to make it happen that OT winner happen. The fact that he doesn’t get any shine and neither does Kreider after that faceoff lost should tell you a thing or two when people like Dave try to ressurect that play.

That Cally play is exactly why Kreider should never be sporting that “C” on his chest. Cally/McD were all heart and brought their hard hat to work every night. Less skills, anchors, injuries ect have never slowed them down.

Nobody on that Game 7 play did anything overly-amazing or really special, to be frank. The Kings won two Cups largely embracing a “fling it in and see what happens” approach (which still to this day annoys me, but it is what it is). That’s one where it worked for the Rangers for a change.

That said, Game 7 OT winner > gutsy shift, IMO, regarding my personal fan experience. Eight days a week. Gutsy shifts happen every night in the NHL, even if many are not quite so gutsy as Cally’s effort in question here. Game 7 OT winners are always special, even if the goal itself is not particularly dazzling.

Dude, have you not seen the news today? They extended Lundqvist at 8X$11M, and then traded Kravstov, Chytil, 2019 + 2020 first rounders to get Girardi back from Tampa. Also traded Andersson, Howden, and Rykov to the Yotes to get Stepan back. Also signed Tanner Glass to a 4X$6M deal. Busy day for Gorton! MAKE THE RANGERS GREAT AGAIN! 🙂

Bringing back Stepan would be a nightmare within itself that would revolve aroud Fantasy Island. I was very pleased to see him get shipped to the desert 🙂

Hank should get that extension though

The 16th seed may beat the 1st seed, but not in this case.
