Rangers re-sign John Gilmour to one-year deal

The little work is done for the Rangers. John Gilmour has re-signed for one more year (contract details pending), marking the final RFA outside of the big names that need to be re-signed.

Gilmour, 25, was a midseason call up last season after spending a year and a half in Hartford. In 28 games, he put up 2-3-5 while playing primarily bottom pairing minutes. Gilmour will be in the mix for a roster spot next year, but nothing is guaranteed.

  • It’s a stupid signing of Cody McLeod, the tough guy who won’t fight. Remember the game that Hank was hit in the face and ? Cody McLeod did nothing in that game. How many games he played in NYR uniform last year? 30 games? He maybe fought once. Cody McLeod is worse than Tanner Glass.

    • I said the day after the game and I will say it again, that Nashville game where 2 Rangers got knocked out within the same period, with this guy in the line up and doing nothing about it, #1 should prove that these types of players do nothing to deter anything, and #2 that this guy is totally useless in the role he’s supposed to play.

Chris Stewart should have been the guy to sign. Can at least play hockey and is a 10 times better fighter than McLeod is. I really don’t know what the thinking was here.

      • “…#1 should prove that these types of players do nothing to deter anything…”

I think we can begin to investigate that these types of players help to inspire this type of play. The NHL game has moved past fighting for the most part. Tough guys need to fight in order to earn their roster spot and ice time. That means they are looking to create opportunities to justify their paycheck and may have to rough up a skill player to do it.

        • I agree, and I have no problem adding a Chris Stewart type, who can chip in 10ish goals, and who can also beat the crap out of 99% of the guys in the league.

The Rangers did a human disservice by giving McLeod a contract, who IMO, is another candidate to potentially get seriously hurt.

Again, I am a Gorton supporter, but this signing makes zero sense.

      • Exactly. Hank was hit in the head and Jimmy Vesey had a concussion in that game, and Cody McLeod just skated around like nothing happened. If it was up to me, I would release him right after that game.

Cody McLeod is a very slow skater, he doesn’t know how to play hockey, and he is a tough guy who DOES NOT fight…just like me.
Why don’t the NYR give me $750k for doing nothing? So stupid.
