Game 79: Tank City

The Rangers are back in action tonight, and I have to admit I completely forgot there was a game. I’m wrapped up in family things for both Easter and Passover. Hooray holidays.

Anyway, here’s the game thread. Sorry for the lack of substance to this one.

Canes Systems

Under Bill Peters, the Canes play a passive 1-2-2 on the forecheck and look to trap up the neutral zone. In their own end they run your standard low zone collapse. Not the most exciting of systems. On special teams, they run an umbrella powerplay, and a diamond/box hybrid PK.

For more on these systems, check out our Hockey Systems page.

I know AV has deluded himself into thinking he has found some special combo there on the 1st line, but this is getting ridiculous. How about flip flopping Fast and Buch, or better yet for a change of pace how about trying Spooner on the 1st line, Fast on the 4th and Buchnevich on the 2nd or 3rd (whichever). It’s not like these lines have been winning games lately.

I’m a big supporter of Fast (unlike some of you here) as the type of player a Championship team should have, but not in the Top 6 (unless necessary) and certainly not to the detriment of a player like Buchnevich.

I’m also a little miffed with slapping Vlad as the 4th line center every game. It won’t increase his trade value nor will it give us a real good read on whether he should even be on this team next season.

    PS: F AV 😉

The Canes have anemic scoring, mobile but mistake prone defensemen and Scott Darleak between the pipes. It will be tough even for a Ranger team in tank mode to lose this one.

Crazy prediction…The team bus leaves Carolina without AV on it.

    • Mar 31, 2018 at 6:27 pm

Not so crazy prediction: Almost all Ranger fans agree that AV should be left in Carolina along with Lindy Ruff and Scott Arniel …. and …. they’re going to fly out of Raleigh, hence if you really want to make sure AV doesn’t come back to NY, make sure he isn’t on the team plane.

Let’s hope the writing is on the wall for the entire coaching staff. They all must be fired. Although I did have a nightmare that produced a headline that said, AV given a 3 year extension.. Lord help us!!!

Bobby B…….from your lips to Gods ears……But it wont matter unless we jettison Gorton and Sather along with them………
NOT that I am keeping track but look at the ”’Studs”’ we traded or let leave the last few years and have squat to show for them……
JT Miller closing in on 25 goals………..220 pounds
      Eric Stall 40+ goals………..230 pounds
      McDonagh…… pair D man…….220 pounds
      Strallman……top d man…..ok only a buck 90…….
      Grabner…….25 goals…….200 pounds……
      Nash……20 goals………230 pounds……
AND the rangers continue get smaller, softer …….
Evander Kane was traded for ”conditional late first round pick” and couple prospects……This stud and his 25 goals would have looked good on broadway!!!!!!!!!!

Rich S, I see you got pounded with 13 thumbs down. I gave you a thumbs up. I too am a believer in size and grit. Trading Miller was a mistake, he needed a coach who trusted him on a top line, and endorsed his bruising style of play. Never would have happened on the AV watch. You need size and grit along with speed and skill. THE AV style, pond hockey, European hockey ,will get you a few points during the regular season, but come playoff time, his teams always fail to win the big one. I hope the draft produces NHL caliber talent, size and players who have each other’s backs,. Some nastiness too. Of course it will not matter is AV is still around!!

He didn’t get the thumbs down for his comment re: Miller … it’s all the harping on all the rest of the dearly departed. I mean he’s complaining that we traded two UFAs for a 1st, a 2nd and two good defensive prospects — while getting Spooner as well. It’s not like the Rangers can’t resign either or both come July … and despite my own misgivings in trading Miller and McD, they got a decent haul — the results of which we won’t know for years.

Unlike others I love the creativity of the names on the board . The great play of this team! And the bad play of all the teams under us.Keep playing great and we may get the #12 spot, yay!

no wonder we have only won 1 cup in 78 years….I still love them…but just utterly stupid

Let me start by saying I don’t believe in tanking, you can’t tell your players to intentionally lose a game EVER! But when you tell your fans we are rebuilding and you are eliminated from the playoff race why are you playing most of your veterans? Tell me how it helps the rebuild by playing most of the guys who know what their role for next season is? Why are we not playing as many young players as possible to see what they can do in the N.H.L.when the games mean nothing?
I can not believe what they are doing, it makes absolutely no sense at all! What the hell are Sather and Gorton thinking? I just don’t understand what they are doing. I can’t figure out what they are trying to accomplish with the games we have left this season. For me this only makes me feel the wrong guys are in charge of this team. I JUST DON’T GET IT!

    • Apr 1, 2018 at 10:42 pm

You have 4 rookie d’men and 2 rookie forwards playing good minutes, before that you had a rookie goalie play 9-10 games …. what more do you want them to do? If you want to know exactly why this team has won a few games over the course of the last 15-20 games just look at the goaltending we’ve gotten … it’s the goaltending that has masked poor systemic play, otherwise we would be right down there with the Islanders, Edmonton, Chicago and maybe even Detroit.

      • Apr 2, 2018 at 8:09 am

Your right, they should have brought up their ECHL goalie for sure!!!!!!!! With our luck, they still would have won????????
