Game 67: Rangers pulling a NY Jets

rangers jets mika zibanejad

The Rangers are back home tonight after doing surprisingly well on the road trip out west. They’ve played well since the trade deadline, actually, which is both surprising and, to some, disappointing. The Blueshirts sold at the deadline and are supposed to be tanking. The players did not get the memo.

Apparently this is the same memo that that NY Jets missed, since they were supposed to tank and instead wound up with five wins, about three more than anyone expected. But here we are, with the Blueshirts winning games. At least the games have been fun to watch, even if you think the goalies are gonna need new legs.

Jets Systems

Paul Maurice and the Jets play a 1-2-2 forecheck which can be used aggressively or conservatively depending on game situation (e.g., puck location, matchup, time left on the clock, score, etc.). In the defensive zone, the Jets play a zone defense, with five skaters getting sticks and bodies in lanes.

On special teams, the Jets play an umbrella PP and will look to crash the net after a shot. On the PK, the Jets play a rotating box and look to defend homeplate. For more on the systems, click here.

  • We may want the team to tank in order to get a better draft position. The players don’t want to tank. They may not be here next year or in future years when that player makes the NHL.

  • Hockey is the one sport where “tanking” is nearly impossible. First, the players ha ve too much pride. Then, it is the only sport without subs. Even if fourth liners play long minutes, the other lines must play. Playing your top goalie makes it even harder.

  • In order to be a real contender for the cup, the Rangers need to have someone like Patrik Laine,

How do you get someone like Patrik Laine? The Rangers need to get top 3 or top 5 draft picks.

How do you get top 3 or top 5 draft picks? You need to tank.

How do you tank “in the right way”? You need to either sit Hank the rest of the games or you fire AV asap.

    • Been saying this since the memo came out stop playing Hank make him rethink that no move contract. Sorry Hank but the team needs you to go. We can not have Hank single handedly move us 5 positions in the Draft.

  • I read this blog daily because it is informative, interesting, and it tolerates a wide range of views…kudos!! but the last few weeks many of the sentiments, both by posters and the writers of this blog, such as rooting for the team to “tank” and wanting professional athletes to not put forth their best effort is just plain disheartening. I understand draft position, 1 cup in 75 or so years, wanting our team to win, but wanting our team to “tank”!?
just needed to get that out there.

Players will never Tank Management needs to help it along.

    • The Rangers management sent a public letter to the Ranger fans a few weeks ago saying that the team is going to rebuild and get as much draft picks and young talents as possible. So by winning a few meaningless game at this time while weakening the draft position in the coming draft, how does it help the Rangers?

    • I would like to see the Rangers call up some of the other dmen from the iron league and see what they bring to the table.
