The Rangers couldn’t do much worse than they did against Dallas. It was historically bad. Last night wasn’t at that level, at least not from a pure numbers standpoint, but it felt a lot worse. The Blueshirts no-showed again, but this time couldn’t steal a point against the horribad Sens, dropping the contest by a 3-2 score.

Two turnovers and a brain fart led to the Sens goals, and all three were frustrating to watch. As for the Blueshirts, they at least generated some offense, but nothing was really sustained. You never got the feeling that they were in control and could generate consistent pressure on any given shift. It’s sad, because the Sens are in a tailspin and people will be traded/fired before the end of the season (month?), and they beat the Rangers soundly.

On to the goals:

Kevin Shattenkirk basically passed to Mark Stone in the neutral zone, which put him and Brady Skjei on their heels. With them back-peddling, it left the pass across just over the blue line open to Bobby Ryan. Ryan used Shatty as a screen and beat Hank.

Ryan McDonagh made a smart cross ice pass to Mats Zuccarello out of the zone. Then Zucc did what Zucc does best. He waited until a passing lane opened, and he threaded the needle right to Michael Grabner’s blade. He didn’t even need to do anything other than watch the puck hit his stick.

Sens 2, Rangers 1

First Kevin Hayes lost the puck at the Sens blue line. Then Brendan Smith was forced into a turnover at the Rangers blue line, then promptly lost his stick. He was rendered useless, as Marc Staal did his half swan-dive across to stop a bad angle shot. His swan dive took him and Rick Nash out of the play. The Sens regrouped, and Matt Duchene slid the puck across the slot to Cody Ceci. Smith, without a stick, tried to block it, but wound up screening Hank instead.

Both defensemen chased the puck carrier behind the net. JT Miller couldn’t get position on Zack Smith. That was sloppy.

Chris Kreider got the puck into the zone with speed, fought off a check, and then set up Pavel Buchnevich perfectly for the goal.

Score Adjusted Corsi

The Rangers never seemed to get anything sustained in this game, at least not until the third period. Par for the course lately. Really wish this team didn’t need to be down big and late before they wake up. Lovely to see a pair of shot attempts in the final eight minutes go.

Scoring Chances (not score adjusted)

Good lord, Ottawa really stifled the Rangers. That’s not a lot of chances. Meanwhile, the Rangers gave offensively challenged Ottawa all the chances. Woof.

This was an incredibly disappointing game. At least Pavelec stood on his head against Dallas, which made that game kind of fun. Guy Boucher really sucks the fun out of the game with his 1-1-3 trap. Combine that with a second straight poor on-ice product, and you have a snooze fest. Two points given away.
