The Rangers have waived forward Marek Hrivik. If he clears, he will be sent back to the Hartford Wolf Pack in the AHL, where he will likely be the first injury call up again. Hrivik played solid if unspectacular hockey in his 16 game stint with the Rangers this year. He registered a pair of assists, the second and third of his career, while playing primarily in a fourth line role.

Hrivik’s success helped stabilize what could have been a disastrous fourth line as the Rangers dealt with a flurry of injuries in December. Hrivik’s weakness is that he isn’t offensively gifted enough for the NHL, which eventually led to the Rangers choosing Matt Puempel over him. Alain Vigneault wants skill up and down the lineup, and it’s tough to really fault that logic.

If Hrivik clears, he will likely be back at some point this season if the Rangers are unable to remain healthy. At the very worst, he will be a part of the taxi squad for the playoff run.

  • I never understood why he re-signed with the Rangers. He would have had more opportunity signing with another organization.

    • Did he sign early? Maybe his agent told him he wasn’t getting any other offers. Rangers signed Pirri and Gerbe late IIRC. Also Puempel wasn’t here yet. Maybe Gorton told him he had a legit shot to make the team.

  • I be surprised if Marek is picked up on waivers. While I don’t think he hurt the team, I didn’t believe he was very effective. He is a good skater with good hockey sense but so are many players in the AHL. Marek is blessed with some size and if he used it more, he would differentiate himself from the pack.

    • Bloomer is right a big guy that doesn’t play physical enough. He has the size but not enough grit which he probably why he signed the deal with the Rangers. Career minor league player.

  • He’s a grinder. Good on the boards / on the cycle. Not the type of hockey they play here. I could see a blue collar team picking him up.
