Game 35: Another Sunday date against the Devils

AP Photo/Kathy Willens

For the second straight Sunday, the Rangers and Devils are facing off at MSG. Last week, the Rangers steamrolled the Devils to a 5-0 win. Don’t expect the same results this time though. The Devils have a great goaltender, which gives them a shot to win every game. However the rest of the team is mediocre at best as they rebuild.

As for the Rangers, they’ve won five of six while scoring fewer than three goals in four of those five wins. The team defense is coming around, and Henrik Lundqvist seems to have gotten past his early season struggles. With the Penguins and Blue Jackets breathing down their necks, the Rangers could use the two points to keep up.

Devils Systems

John Hynes has his club running a 1-2-2 forecheck, a low zone collapse, an umbrealla powerplay and a hybrid penalty kill. These are standard systems across the board, and are not very aggressive in nature. The Devils will look to sit and force turnovers in the neutral zone on the forecheck, then collapse to block shots and defend the high priced real estate in the defensive zone. Considering the team, conservative is probably his best bet.

  • That’s the craziest prediction of them all! Since the King didn’t have a shutout last night.

Is he confirmed to start tonight? I thought raanta maybe

  • Columbus breathing hard indeed, 9 wins in a row as the Blue Jackets down the Canucks this afternoon. Torts with his 500th. win, he is back baby! AV will have to keep the Rangers rolling to keep pace with the beasts of the East.

      • I see that play dozens of time every game. It’s called a forecheck, and Girardi is hardly the only victim of aggressive forechecking behind the net. It was just a great play, with a sweet pass out front.

Dems the breaks. But fear not, perennial goat Stepan is here to save the day.

        • Nice Chris. I like that one. Yeah Zucc was behind the net with Girardi on that play but some people just love getting on Girardi even when he’s playing well. But like you said Step was there to save the day anyway..

  • Face off win by Stepan, great pass by McD to Stepan for a better defection. Nash has been a monster all night with Hayes and Miller. Lindbergh,Fast and Vesey good game.

  • Looks like Hank is back. Take the 2 points and run. That they had to struggle so mightily against an inferior Devils team, especially at home is concerning—-but—its only December. In a couple of days this game will be forgotten. Just one of 82. They don’t give you extra points for style. Like I said, take the points and run. On to Pitt!

  • I’m glad Zucc is getting his SOmgoals and the open netter the other night but man it’s been a long time since he’s scored in regulation. Not an open netter obviously. I’m pretty sure it’s at least 18 games now
