Rangers assign Brandon Halverson and Jeff Malcom to Hartford

The next round of cuts for the Rangers has come, and goalies Brandon Halverson and Jeff Malcolm are the only two being cut. With Henrik Lundqvist returning and a logjam at the position, Halverson and Malcolm will be returned to the Hartford Wolf Pack for their training camp.

With this move, the Rangers have four goalies remaining in camp: Lundqvist, Antti Raanta, Magnus Hellberg, and Mackenzie Skapski.

  • Consider this pure spitballing, David: but do you feel anywhere near at ease giving Mac Skapski the backup role should Antti Raanta be included in a Jacob Trouba package?

Beyond an adequate Pavelec, Winnipeg’s discernibly wanting in goal.

      • Arguably Raanta gives Winnipeg a chance at postseason play, Dave. And, reflexively revenue.

Your take then is either one of Halverson or Skapski, plus who: Kevin Klein; Marc Staal?

Seems Halverson was deemed the better prospect. But according to Doc Ronty, if not others, he’s regressed somewhat.

I know our man Richter’s kicked up a hornet’s nest by mulling a Zuke for Trouba trade. But again, keying on The Jets’s apparent needs, they seem thin in goal, as well second tier D.

    • They do have one of the better young goalies in the world in Connor Hellebucyk and Michael Hutchinson isn’t a terrible option for a backup.

I don’t think WPG has interest in Raanta, or any other goalie.

      • You said it, Chris. “Isn’t… terrible… for a backup.”

Not exactly Vince Lombardi-esqe bravado there.

Inasmuch I get your point. By the way, Hellebuyck would ask that you spell the family name correctly. I mean, unless you’re speaking to some unknown love child of Johnny Bucyk and…

        • Ha, nice catch on the spelling.

Historically, goalies tend to be worthless in trades. Especially backup goalies. Backup goalie is the one NHL position where supply completely outstrips demand.

  • Trouba is not a Drew Doughty, Hedman or Brent Burns. He is a shutdown defenceman with limited offensive talent. The Rangers already have that in their present lineup. I can see perhaps a Cam Fowler type player being acquired to give the Rangers another offensive weapon.
