Rangers return Brady Skjei and Magnus Hellberg to Hartford

The Rangers have returned defenseman Brady Skjei and goalie Magnus Hellberg to the Hartford Wolf Pack of the AHL. Both were emergency call ups for injuries to various Rangers. With the Rangers off until Saturday afternoon, it is likely that their current stints are over.

Hellberg did not play in his stint, serving as the backup to Antti Raanta. Skjei played in last night’s game in Buffalo, and did not register a point.

This move also saves cap space, but Alain Vigneault said Henrik Lundqvist is likely to play Saturday. Skjei may be back if Marc Staal or Dylan McIlrath are still out, but that’s unlikely.

Should keep Skjei up in the big league. Our breakout play has to be the worst in the NHL. Brady improves it with his skating and passing ability. Seat Girardi and Boyle. Their passing on the breakout is poor – especially Girardi.

Doug, with all respect, no team decides after all of four NHL games that an untested defenseman is a better option in the playoffs than veteran players with a proven track record. Skjei has upside, but it’s going to take time. Also, barring a significant injury, the cap won’t allow for it it seems.

Skjei will stay with the club, but was “sent down” for cap compliance between games. Hellberg is likely in the same situation until Hank is ready to return.

Pat Leonard is reporting that assuming Staal gets the green light and can play this weekend, they won’t recall Skjei until the west coast trip next week.
