Lines for tonight’s preseason game against Flyers

Per Andrew Gross, the Rangers are scratching Oscar Lindberg, Tanner Glass, Jayson Megna, Raphael Diaz, and Kevin Klein tonight. The lines for tonight look like Alain Vigneault is doing some of his patented tinkering:

Chris Kreider-Derek Stepan-Rick Nash
J.T. Miller-Derick Brassard-Mats Zuccarello
Jesper Fast-Kevin Hayes-Viktor Stalberg
Jarret Stoll-Dominic Moore-Emerson Etem

Keith Yandle-Dylan McIlrath
Marc Staal-Dan Boyle
Ryan McDonagh-Dan Girardi

Henrik Lundqvist/Antti Raanta

I find it interesting that McIlrath is getting a look alongside Yandle. There are two things that come to mind here. First is that if it works, is Kevin Klein’s future as a Ranger in jeopardy? Second is that if it works, will they look to rotate eight defensemen to get some of the older veterans some rest?

  1. I really think and hope it’s the latter, Dave. AV has said in camp how important it is to give his veteran defensemen rest this season. Carrying 8D, if the cap allows for it, gives needed rest to key vets, allows you to slowly weave in McIlrath, gives you time to assess Skjei in the minors, and then you can possibly pull the trigger on a Klein trade if you need cap space to fill other needs before the deadline.

If the Klein trade is made now and we carry 7D, it force feeds a rookie defenseman into the lineup, eliminates the opportunity to rest key players (in fact, creates the reverse, you wind up playing your guys more while you give sheltered minutes to McIlrath or Diaz), and if you have an injury to the top 4 (chances of injury goes up with more playing time), suddenly, the best defense in hockey is very vulnerable.

  2. Oskar sitting indicates he has made the club.. Wonder if Stalberg needs a big game to stay. Glass, Megma, Stalberg and Etem on the bubble. I think Stoll makes the club as well. Glass has big salary that, even if he agrees to go down, has nearly a $0.5M hit against the CAP.

Defensive side – I think Diaz and Mcilrath play for one open spot

  3. Excellent posts, feeling good about Mcilraths chances, Diaz is holding his own, but the future benefits are with Mcilrath. Tonight may the Flyers feel the wrath of the UNDERTAKER!! 🙂
