Conference Finals Game Six: Send it back to New York

Another day, another elimination game for the Rangers. This seems to be the status-quo recently. Henrik Lundqvist is 12-3 in elimination games, but the Bolts are probably the best overall team he’s faced in an elimination game since the Kings last year. The Bolts are without Cedric Paquette tonight, so maybe that will help. Then again, it’s been the top-six that have murdered the Rangers defense. Not the bottom six.

Justin wrote a very detailed analysis on how to beat Ben Bishop, and I wrote a detailed systems/numbers preview of the series. Both are great reads if you haven’t already perused.

Bolts Systems

Jon Cooper has the Lightning playing a pretty similar system as the Rangers. They run an overload 1-2-2 forecheck, but will mix in a 2-1-2 as well. In the defensive zone, they mix zone and overload coverage depending on puck location. On special teams, they run a 1-3-1 power play and rotate between a diamond and box penalty kill depending on opposition setup.

  1. Gentlemen, it’s show time, earn your keep. It’s time to crap, or get off the pot. Again, I know many of you hated the man, but I’ll quote him just the same, “just win baby” !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. It is Semper Fi; do or die time…”The strong shall live and those who dare: WIN”

  3. No idea if this is true or not, so take it with a grain of salt. Was listening to NHL Network Radio on the way home moments ago and the guys on air were saying there is Twitter activity strongly suggesting that several key players, including some of the Triplets, may be playing this game “under the weather”.

Again, may be a bunch of nonsense, but something to watch for tonight……

  4. Enough with the cliches’! Just score some freakin’ goals. Nash————Do something!! MSL—-DO SOMETHING. Hank—BE HANK!! No predictions here. I thought they had the momentum after game 4; but they crapped all over that. If they’re gonna’ lose, I hope they get blown out. I don’t need a summer to hear how they ‘left it all on the ice, only to come up short.’ They’re the top seed in the League—PROVE IT!!!! Cliches’ are for losers!!!

  5. If is was the regular season, Kreider would be pinned to the bench and/or he’d sit in the press box next game for another stupid, selfish penalty. I’m just stunned at how “hockey dumb” he is. Still, no excuse for Cally to be left wide open like that.

    Other than that….Dan Boyle…terrific! Yandle….terrific! Miller…..Brassard…outstanding!

Keep crashing the net. Bishop totally vulnerable with bodies in front.

Lundqvist….is anyone shocked? The guy is unreal!

Just can not afford stupid mistakes the final 40, or it will indeed be the final 40.

  6. “when brian boyle is the third line center you are not ready to compete for the stanley cup”

we’ll see. does it mean anything when ryan callahan is your third line wing or is boyle the only relevant indicator? 🙂

    1. For all intents and purposes callahan was playing on our 3rd most productive line for all of last year until we traded him. Seeing him on tampas 3rd further justifies that he was asking for unreal money and a ntc, both of which weren’t warranted.

We may not have chosen correctly in Girardi > stralman, but paying and retaining zuc > cally definitely has proven fruitful.

  7. Glass half empty……Bolts dominating and we look overmatched. No way we hang on.

Glass half full…..we have ’em right where we want ’em! 🙂

Needs to be the best 20 minutes of the season.

  8. Drive the net…one period left….Attack…possess and shoot the puck “Barry, shoot the puck”

  9. I really hate this “Turtle” crap, but have to admit, we are looking more n more comfy as the game goes on with it.

  10. Ah, Nash, proving his haters wrong. I love it. 4 goals, 9 assists. That’s 13 goals Nash has contributed to.

His 3 assists tonight? The direct result of the sort of play he’s been exhibiting all playoffs.

    1. Make that 5 goals, 9 assists.

Rangers facing elimination and Nash comes out with a goal and 3 assists. Let’s see how long it takes before his critics come back out from under their rocks. My guess is 1 game. Maybe 2, if Rangers advance.

Also, huge shout out to Brassard and Miller.

      1. Boy is Walt hapoy tonight!!!!!

His boy gets his first goal, in total Walt fashion, powering his way to the net. That pass he gave to Brass, looked like a Magic Johnson no look pass lol.

Not that we all aren’t happy, but Walts pleads have definitely been answered tonight lol!!! Les Go Rangersssss!!!!

  11. I asked for a hat trick yesterday and Brassard got us one! So Brassard becomes Messier. Lundqvist stood tall in the second period just like Richter did 21 years ago. Now we have a Game 7 ECF for the first time since that magical season. Anyone want to bet against Game 7 going to OT? Who will be Matteau? 🙂

Just terrific! This team never ceases to amaze me. Heart…character….what else to say?

Props by the way to the oft maligned 4th line. Sheppard and Glass major props!

Miller is growing up before our eyes!

Wow!!!!! I may not get to sleep until 3…I’m so fired up! LGR!!!!!!

  12. I was in Hartford tonight for the 5-2 loss. Great to watch the Rangers win on TV, but here’s my view of the Pack; Skeij & Lindberg are players, McIlrath is #6 with fists, Allen is #6 without fists, the rest are scrubs or worse. Skapski got hung out to dry, but he still has to shoulder some of the blame.

  13. Sheppard with a goal let alone the gwg lol. So lets just say if Zuuc comes back, now who’s gonna sit…..gulp :-)?

    1. MSL has to sit

If he does not sit there is a chance MSL can dig deep and play just 1 game and contribute offensively and score a goal

    2. LOL! I was just thinking that. Who knows? Who cares? Great problem to have!

I actually don’t think Zuc will be ready. He hasn’t been cleared for contact. AV said he would need at least one practice. And, as much as we all love the guy, is it realistic to think he could come back and be Zuc at his best? I’d bet he’s 90% likely not to play.

On the other hand, can you imagine if he did come out? It would be a Willis Reed moment all over again!
