Rangers 2014 Prospect Camp roster

The Rangers released the 2014 Prospect Camp roster last night. As always, the roster includes current prospects, 2014 draftees, and undrafted free agents.

Forwards:

Defense: Calle Andersson, Justin Baker, Travis Brown, Mat Bodie, Luke Curadi, Troy Donnay, Spiro Goulakis, Ryan Mantha, Vojtech Mozik, Tyler Nanne, Sam Noreau, Brady Skjei, Daniel Walcott, Petr Zamorksy

Goaltending: Brandon Halverson, Matt O’Connor, Mackenzie Skapski, Colin Stevens

The one curious omission is Boo Nieves, the Rangers 2012 2nd round pick.

  • Dave, about Boo, I think attending the camp affects NCAA eligibility. Also, if that’s the case I assume Skjei is leaving school this summer.

    • Don’t quote me on this… but I believe NCAA athletes are allowed to attend camp… However they must pay their own way, and must return all supplied equipment immediately after camp…
If I’m right that doesn’t necessarily mean Skjei is leaving school… keep in mind Tyler Nanne is a Ohio St. commit as well.

On Skjei… I’ve been watching him at Minn… and he’s not NHL ready… personally I feel he’s a least two years away, but maybe getting him to the AHL for a year would speed up the process. But for those who think of using him as a 6th D this year to save some cap space need to not get too excited just yet. But then again I’m no scout, and surprises do happen and are greatly welcome.

      • Yes, I think you’re right Kevin. If the team pays for the player to attend the player loses their eligibility. That does sound very familiar. Guess Boo doesn’t want to pay while Skjei doesn’t mind.

Everything I heard about Skjei was that he is still in the project stage and would benefit from more NCAA time. That works out nicely for the Rangers as he doesn’t need to sign an ELC while in college and there is not need to start the clock on his ELC years.

  • Completely off topic, but I felt I should throw this out there. I was playing around on capgeek trying to see how the Rangers are going to operate with $2M less in cap space than what was projected. I discovered a young D man that is a UFA that really opened my eyes last year when the Rangers played the Canes three times in April last year.

Did anyone else remember Brett Bellemore? He was playing second pair for the Canes in those games. He is a right-handed shot, was pretty physical (6’4″ and 220 lbs) and decent with the puck. It seems with the front office shuffle in CAR they are letting him test free agency. He was only making $776k last year. Maybe the Rangers can give him a slight raise and get him in the organization? He might be nothing more than a depth guy but at 26 he still could be something. He also seems like a much more useful player than someone like Justin Falk and might be better for depth purposes (and possibly cheaper) than Diaz.

Sign a guy like Bellemore and Ryan Carter from the Devils and the Rangers can add some physical, skilled players on the cheap.

  • I hear that the Rangers are also looking at Mark Fayne, of the Devils. He is 6’3″, 220 lbs, right side defenseman, and is physical, currently earning $1.3 mil. That would be a nice 6th d-man, size, grit, and reasonable cost!!!!! He likes to throw his body around, something we don’t see much from our blueline???????

  • Dave

Any report on Sam Noreau? Man this guys is big, tough, and is developing nicely the last I read about him!!!!!
