JT Miller and Brady Skjei make US World Junior club

Update: 10:10am: Ok I misunderstood what was going on. I thought the roster had been set. It has not. Miller is expected to make the team. Skjei is still on the bubble, but has impressed thus far in camp.

Original Post: This is a bit old, but J.T. Miller and Brady Skjei have both made the US team for this year’s World Junior Championships. Miller, who was on the team last year, will likely be named captain prior to the start of the tournament. This will be Skjei’s first year with the club. Skjei has already received comparisons to Ryan McDonagh, but it’s a bit early in the game to be making that sort of comparison.

Miller had a bit of a slow start with Connecticut, but has really turned it on as of late. In seven games in December, Miller has a line of 3-4-7. In his previous 18 games in October and November, Miller had a line of just 2-5-7.

Skjei isn’t lighting the lamp with Minnesota with a line of 1-1-2 in 15 games, but the fact that he made the WJC club shows where he is in terms of overall skill. Remember, point totals are misleading.

  • As I understand the roster isn’t finalized yet. The players that are in camp will all travel to Finland for the exhibition games, but there’s another round of cuts still to come. Miller is safe; Skjei is on the bubble due to all the blueline depth.

  • It’s still great that we have these two young men ready to play, and are being considered for a position on the team!!!!!

  • Really wish people would stop with the “Skeji is not lighting the lamp” stuff. He is a freshman playing on a legit NCAA tournament favorite and his role has been mainly defensive defender.

He is growing into his role at Minnesota and his coach must have some faith in him using him as the starting defender on several occasions.

The comparison to McDonagh is correct because McDonagh never was much of a scorer while he was playing at Wisconsin. Take a look at who Skeji has been paired with and you will see that his partner has typically been the offensive minded defender of the pairing.

  • It’s always great when Rangers prospects are on Team USA for the WJC. Too bad it is in Russia this year and the big time difference!

I’m excited to watch Miller, I haven’t seen that much of the Whale. It sounds like he’s doing well, not awesome, not bad though. He’s 19 playing pro hockey it must be tough.. Sounds like he will be on the top line with Gaudreau and Grimaldi, should be a good line. And Miller may be a Captain or Assistant.. Wasn’t Stepan the Captain one year?

Whether or not Skeji makes it, at least he is being heavily considered and gets the experience of camp/ exhibition games.

Should be a fun tourny to watch and hopefully USA can take our minds off the lockout for a minute.
