Minor signing: Rangers sign Brandon Segal

In another depth move designed to strengthen the Connecticut Whale, the Rangers have signed RW Brandon Segal. Terms of the deal are still undisclosed, but Segal is likely going to be an insurance policy for the CT Whale, as the 29 year old winger has just 102 NHL games under his belt (11-11-22).

The 6’2″, 209 lb RW plays consistent minutes in the AHL, but has never found the kind of consistency that would help him stick at the NHL level. It is likely that Segal would be an injury call up during the season, if the need arises.

  • Physical guy that will drop the gloves. Hasn’t stuck in the NHL, but has at least shown the ability to play at the top level. Never a bad thing to have a couple of those guys waiting in the minors. Figure he, Newbury and Wellman have the best chance at seeing NHL action, depending on development of the true prospects like Bourque and Miller.

    • I’d assume if a bottom-six guy gets hurt, it’ll be Newbury/Segal to get the call. A top-six guy, and Wellman will get the call.

As for Haley…well, I still don’t get that.

  • With all the enforcers we are signing, I have a feeling that some of these guys are going to get some suspensions and we have a pool of punching bags available.

  • The Whale did need replenishing. I think Wellman is a dark horse who could make the big team. Bourque was a terrific junior but his numbers last year were very disappointing. That being said, I think he will show a major improvement this year.
