Well…. it looks like Sweden, much like the Rangers, know who to rely on. Henrik Lundqvist made 21 saves for the shutout as Team Sweden began with a solid yet unspectacular 2-0 victory over Germany. Matthias Ohlund and Loui Eriksson scored the goals for the Swedes. Veteran Peter Forsberg played and featured on the power play.

If ‘The King’ plays like this every game then Sweden will be a very strong contender once again…

Two other games to tell you about… Finlands comfortable 5-1 victory over Belarus featured new Ranger Olli Jokinen who scored the first Finland goal. The first point for a Ranger in this Olympics. Mikko Koivu got 3 assists while Nicklas Hagman had 2 goals for the Scandinavians.

Finally Slovakia, unexpectedly WITH Marian Gaborik, lost 3-1 to the Czech Republic. So, not being expected to play what did Gabby go and do? Score the lone goal for his team in a losing cause. Sound familiar?! Also featuring prominently was Jaromir Jagr who looked good scoring the game winner and collecting 2 points overall. Also scoring goals for the Czechs were Tomas Plekanec and Jersey’s Patrick Elias. It seems the Jagr NHL audition has begun…..

Slovakia, with Gaborik (who took 6 shots) face Russia today in what already looks a pivotal match for the Slovaks.

Also on tap today is Team USA’s second game vs. Norway while Canada face Switzerland.
