In addition to the scratches tonight, some quick news:

We will be live blogging the trade deadline tonight and tomorrow, excluding midnight through 8am (sleep is required). So keep checking back.

Update 11:10pm: It doesn’t look like anything big is going down tonight.

Update 9:30am: Still nothing. Chris Pronger is off the market. Kaberle went down with an injury, so he won’t be traded.

Update 10:00am: Nothing yet. Seems like all the trades will be announced at the same time.

Update 10:01am: I spoke too soon. The next big trade goes down, with Columbus getting Antione Vermette from Ottawa for Pascal Leclaire and a 2nd round pick.

Leclaire was going to be traded, and this makes sense for Ottawa, as they really don’t know what they have in Elliot. Getting Vermette for Leclaire is a solid deal for the Blue Jackets as well.

Apparently this deal went down at 9:22am, so I guess my internet is slow to refresh.

Update 10:05am: Ottawa is busy this morning, Filip Kuba has re-upped with the team for three more years, at $3.7 million a year.

Update 11:00am: Tim Connely Connolly re-ups with Buffalo at 2 years, $9 million.

Update 11:30am: Other than the Columbus/Ottawa deal, there’s nothing else yet. Three and a half hours to go.

Update 11:45am: Jordan Leopold is headed to Calgary for Lawrence Nycholat (Calargy just acquired him off waivers), a prospect and a draft pick. More info coming.

The prospect is Ryan Wilson, a 21 year old defensemen playing in the AHL for the Quad City Flames. Wilson has 4 G and 16 A and 56 PIMS in 60 games this year, his first in the AHL.

No word on the draft pick yet. It was a 2nd round pick.

Update 11:55am: Pittsburgh made another deal, acquiring Andy Wozniewski from St. Louis for Danny Richmond. This is a minor swap of AHL defensemen.

Update 12:07am: Colorado got more than I thought they would for Leopold. I thought he would go for a prospect + 3rd-4th rounder.

Another deal, Buffalo gets a backup for Patrick Lalime (while Miller is still hurt) in Mikael Tellqvist from Phoenix for a 4th round pick. Nothing huge here, just a backup goalie deal.

Update 12:15pm: Toronto claimed Eric Reitz from the Rangers. So the chain events is as follows:

NYR trades Tyutin and Backman to CBJ for Nikolai Zherdev and Dan Fritsche.
NYR trades Dan Fritsche to MIN for Eric Reitz
NYR claims Mark Bell from TOR
TOR claims Eric Reitz from NYR.

So basically, Tyutin and Backman for Zherdev and Bell. Not a bad deal.

Toronto also claimed Martin Gerber, which was expected, since Toskala has been hurt all year.

And Brendan Morrisson has been claimed off waivers by Dallas.

Update 12:20pm: It looks like Voros cleared waivers and is headed to Hartford. The Depth Chart has been updated to reflect this (and the Reitz move).

Update 12:40pm: Boston picked up the veteran defense presence they were looking for, getting Steve Montador from Anaheim in exchange for the injured Petteri Nokelainen.

I thought Steve Montador would be worth more than just Nokelainen, but I guess not.

And now a HUGE trade. Calgary gets Olli Jokinen from Phoenix in exchange for Matt Lombardi, Brandon Prust, and a 1st round pick. Calgary is going for broke here, and I like the deal on their end too. Phoenix gets a lot for a struggling Jokinen. I like Lombardi, he’s fast with a scoring touch, and Prust adds some size to the Phoenix lineup.

1st round draft picks are worth a lot more this year, this draft has one of the best 1st rounds, and it rivals the 2003 draft. Good job by Maloney.

Update 12:52pm: So running through the Calgary deals:

Calgary gets: Jokinen, Leopold
In exchange for: Lombardi, Prust, Nycholat (just claimed from waivers), Wilson (AHL), 1st round pick, 2nd round pick.

They acquired Jokinen and Leopold without blowing up their roster. That is a solid job by Darryl Suter. Granted, they don’t pick in this deep draft until the 3rd round. (Update: Calgary also got a 3rd round pick from Phoenix.)

Update 1:27pm: Mark Recchi is headed to Boston. Details TBA, I’m assuming a draft pick, probably a 3rd rounder.

Update 1:33pm: Details of the Recchi trade:

To BOS: Recchi, 2nd round pick
To TB: Matt Lashoff (D), Martins Karsums (RW)

Lashoff was Bostons 1st round pick in 2005 and #4 rated prospect in their system (according to Hockeys Future). Karsums was the #14 prospect in their system and their 2nd round pick in 2004. That’s a pretty good deal for TB, Lashoff is supposed to be real solid.

Update 1:57pm: One hour to go. No Ranger moves so far. Remember, even though the deadline is 3pm, news of deals may not break until an hour or two later.

Update 2:15pm: Bill Guerin is headed to Pittsburgh for a conditional pick (5th rounder initially, 4th if they make the playoffs, and 3rd if they make it to the 2nd round).

Pitt added Kunitz and Guerin to go with Crosby and Malkin. Scary.

Update 2:42pm: Brian Burke has been offered 2nd round picks for Dom Moore and Nik Antropov, and only 2nd round picks. Burke is waiting to see if they get offered more.

This is a dead deadline.

Update 2:45pm: Daniel Carcillo to Philly for Scottie Upshall and a 2nd round pick. Interesting deal.

Update 2:47pm: Antropov to the Rangers. It’s official. Probably for a 2nd round pick.

Initial reaction, I like it, I’ve been calling for it since January. Final reaction depends on what Sather sent to Toronto.

Final word on what went to Toronto: 2nd round pick, and a conditional pick.

Update 3:00pm:Derek Morris is a Ranger as well. Details coming.

I will evaluate the Ranger deals in more detail in a different post, I don’t want it to get lost in this monster post.
