No, that wasn’t a typo when checking the current NHL standings. The Rangers are now the #8 seed in the East (tiebreakers put them as the #8 seed) with 66 points. It’s amazing what happens when you free fall for as long as they have been. The amazing thing here, is that when it comes down to points, there is a four-way tie for 5th place between Montreal, Buffalo, Florida and the Rangers, with Montreal and Florida having a game at hand.

Oh, and Carolina sits in 9th place with 61 points. Pittsburgh at 10th with 60 points.

So we now have a few extra teams to root for down the stretch in addition to the Rangers tonight. So tomorrow, when the Hurricanes take on the Islanders, I’m hoping for a Bill Guerin hat trick and an Islanders win. Buffalo vs. Philly? Let’s go Flyers! (I just shuddered. Are you aware how terrible it sounds to say you want the Islanders and Flyers to win? I feel dirty, I think I’m going to go shower after I post this.)

Chicago also takes on Florida on Thursday, it’s not hard to root for the Blackhawks. I like that team, they are young and exciting to watch. As for Montreal/Pitt, can we hope that Mellon Arena finally collapses?

The Rangers still control their own destiny, but they need a lot of help.
