After a long and arduous offseason, the Rangers finally kick things off on the 2017-2018 season on Monday against the Islanders.  There has obviously been a ton of coverage over the summer on the Blueshirts’ moves and non-moves, but as the season approaches, I have some thoughts… Read More→

When the Rangers dealt Antti Raanta to Arizona in the Derek Stepan deal, a quick survey of the market revealed plenty of useful options to serve as Henrik Lundqvist’s backup.  There was a decent mix of higher upside projects and relatively safe veteran choices.  When it came out that Benoit Allaire had zeroed in on Ondrej Pavelec for the role, many were surprised, myself included.

The 29 year-old Czech native (30 when the season starts) was a 2nd round pick of the Atlanta Thrashers back in 2005.  He had shown tremendous promise in the notoriously offensive environment of the QMJHL before getting his first cup of coffee the year after he was drafted.

Happy Friday, BSB faithful.  Sorry to double down on the “Thoughts” and “Musings” posts this week, but it’s been a very active week in Rangerland.  The last time I wrote, it was the day before the Expansion Draft.  Obviously, quite a lot has happened since then.  So, as you can imagine, I have some thoughts.

1. Since there is a lot to analyze, let’s take this in semi-chronological order. Let’s start with the Girardi buy-out.  It had to be done.  I know it sucks carrying his cap hit for the next few years, but the Rangers really had no choice.  They needed to get younger and more mobile on the blue line and starting to clear the log-jam of overpriced veterans was the first domino.  I wish Dan all the best in Tampa, even if I gagged a little when I saw the contract.  Nice try, Yzerman.

Per Bob McKenzie, the Rangers will sign goalie Ondrej Pavelec once the free agency period opens at noon. Pavelec was rumored to be coming to Rangers last night, and McKenzie confirmed it this morning. According to our goalie guru Justin, Pavelec is a solid talent but has inconsistent conditioning and technique. Per friend of the blog Tobias Pettersson, Pavelec’s stats actually aren’t that bad, and he’s a lot better than some other options out there.

Knowing Benoit Allaire, he can likely work with Pavelec to fix his technique. He’s a top goalie coach in the league, and turned Cam Talbot and Antti Raanta into starters with other clubs. If there is anyone who can resurrect Pavelec’s career to his talent level, it’s Allaire.

From past trends, I’d expect this to be a one-year deal. That’s usually what Jeff Gorton does with backups. It’s a one-year show-me deal, then a multi-year deal if it works out.

Dreger: Rangers targeting Ondrej Pavelec

Per Darren Dreger, the Rangers are targeting Ondrej Pavelec to fill their backup goaltending void. The former Jet has a pretty bad rep, but has pretty solid numbers at even strength. That leads us to believe there were special teams issues in Winnipeg. That said, the Rangers also had PK issues, and it’s not like the Rangers have a strong blue line.

This is a classic eye test vs. numbers debate with Pavelec. Justin noted solid talent, but inconsistent technique/conditioning. Bad conditioning can be fixed, and Benoit Allaire can fix anyone’s technique. Pavelec will likely need to start 20 games for the Blueshirts, so let’s hope he just needs a change of scenery and some time with a solid goalie coach.
