The Matt Puempel era in New York has come to an end. The forward, waived to start the season, has been traded to the Detroit Red Wings for defenseman Ryan Sproul. Puempel was claimed off waivers from Ottawa last season, and put up 6-3-9 in 27 games as a Blueshirt. He put up 1-2-3 in 5 games with the Hartford Wolf Pack this season.

Sproul, a former 2nd round pick, has just 28 games of NHL experience (1-6-7). After being selected 55th overall in 2011, Sproul turned pro for the 2013-2014 season, spending the majority of his career with the Grand Rapids Griffins. The 6’3″, 205 lb defenseman is likely more defensive depth for a team that has that in spades at the moment.

This seems to be a trade that is more about a change of scenery for both players. Puempel clearly wasn’t in favor with the coaching staff, as a pair of well traveled “vets” in Paul Carey and Adam Cracknell clearly have higher bidding within the organization.

Rangers re-sign Matt Puempel

The Rangers have re-signed forward Matt Puempel, which now makes them compliant with the expansion draft. The terms of Puempel’s deal were not disclosed. The contract is for one year and $725,000.

Puempel was plucked off waivers from Ottawa last season, and put up 6-3-9 in 27 games while playing primarily on the fourth line. It was necessary to re-sign Puempel (or Fast/Lindberg) before the expansion draft, as the Rangers were not compliant until they had him signed.

It’s unlikely Puempel is selected by Vegas. Expect him back next year, serving as a 13/14F.

Thoughts heading into All-Star Weekend

Posted by: | Comments (40)

As the NHL heads into All-Star weekend, regular season games have been suspended until Tuesday. With the loss to the Flyers on Wednesday, the Rangers go into the break in fourth place in the Metropolitan Division, nine points back of the Caps for the top spot. With sixty percent of the season behind us and just a month to go before the trade deadline, I have some thoughts…

1. Even though it was a small sampling of games over the past week or so, it was nice to see a real bounce back in performance from Henrik Lundqvist. He has looked much sharper since the barnburner against Dallas. Much more poised on his feet, more precision in his angles and movement and more in sync with the team in front of him.

Nash tweaks groin, Puempel has concussion

Posted by: | Comments (14)

Update: Nash will be out one week following an MRI. Puempel has been placed on IR with a concussion, so he will be out at least a week as well. Placing Puempel on IR gives the Rangers room for the Nicklas Jensen call up.

Original Post: More injury news for the Rangers, as their forward depth keeps getting gutted by injuries. They appear to have lost two more forwards to injuries, time tables TBD.

Matt Puempel left the game in the first with a concussion, after taking a rather vicious cross check to the chin by Brock Nelson. Puempel is in the standard concussion protocol

More importantly, Rick Nash tweaked his groin in the second and did not return. That’s a significant loss for the Rangers if it’s long term. More to come.

Thoughts on claiming Matt Puempel

Matt Puempel

Yesterday, the Rangers made a surprising little move by claiming the 24th overall pick in the 2011 Entry Draft, Matt Puempel. Without trying to make this more complex I truly see some good signs regarding this transaction, so lets get to some musings that have sprung from the waiver pick-up.

First and foremost lets get to the semantics, a couple of weeks ago the Rangers terminated Calle Andersson’s contract. In theory, Puempel just takes his slot and the Rangers still have a few spots open for trade flexibility or UDFA signings.

Rangers claim Matt Puempel off waivers

Posted by: | Comments (11)

Matt Puempel

The Rangers have claimed forward Matt Puempel off waivers from the Ottawa Senators. The 2011 first round pick was waived by the Senators after not putting up a point in his 13 games thus far this season. Over 52 career games, Puempel has just four goals and two assists to his name.

Puempel is likely one of those “throw stuff at the wall and see what sticks” moves by Jeff Gorton as he and the Rangers try to deal with the slew of injuries that have done a number on their forward depth.

The 23-year-old forward is signed for this year making $900,000. Worth noting that the Rangers were 28th in the league in waiver priority. So 27 other teams passed on him, with just Chicago and Montreal behind them. At the worst, he’s a forward for Hartford. At the best, he’s a temporary stopgap until the forwards get healthy.
