Mother’s Day open thread

Happy Mother’s Day to all you mothers out there. Mine did a pretty damn fine job of raising me, as Becky can attest to. Buy her flowers, call her, you know, do the usual stuff you would do on Mother’s Day. It’s gorgeous out, so go outside. If you don’t want to listen to me, then the Yankees play at 2:10 against Milwaukee and the Mets are in action at 1:10 against the Phillies. There’s no hockey until our heroes play for their season (again) at 7pm.

Trade deadline day two open thread

Yesterday was one of the more active day-before-deadline days we’ve seen in a while, as several significant moves went down. Roberto Luongo went to Florida, Andrew MacDonald went to Philadelphia, and Anaheim made a few moves that left a few people wondering why they essentially swapped Dustin Penner for Stephane Robidas. There were also four goalies moved yesterday. You can read the whole breakdown here.

Meanwhile, the Rangers were very quiet as they looked to hammer out a deal with Ryan Callahan. Nothing happened yesterday or last night, so he will either be re-signed (my guess) or traded if a deal cannot be worked out.

Use this as your open thread for the trade deadline. We will be updating this post with deals as they go down, with most recent deals on top. Moves the Rangers make will be bolded.

Final update: Matt Moulson (Sabres) has been traded to the Minnesota Wild along with Cody McCormick for Torrey Mitchell and draft picks. Reto Berra from Calgary to Colorado for a draft pick. Thomas Vanek from the Isles to Montreal for Stephen Collberg and a 2014 2nd round pick. David Legwand from Nashville to Detroit. Jaroslav Halak goes from Buffalo to Washington for Michal Neuvirth and a 2014 5th round pick.

3:10pm: Rangers acquire defenseman Raphael Diaz from Vancouver for a 2015 5th round pick.

2:45pm: Boston sends a 3rd rounder to Philly for Andrej Meszaros.

2:25pm: Tim Thomas has been traded from the Florida Panthers to the Dallas Stars for Dan Ellis. Nick Schultz goes from Edmonton to Columbus for a 5th round pick in 2014.

Trade deadline madness, day one open thread

For those of you without Twitter, today was a very eventful day as the trade deadline approaches tomorrow. The Rangers were quiet, with all focus on Ryan Callahan’s situation, but in a day where nothing much was expected, everything happened. None were on par with the St. Louis/Buffalo deal on Friday though.

The biggest trade was announced at 4:45pm EST, when Roberto Luongo went back to Florida for Mark Parrish and Oleg Kvasha Jacob Markstrom and Shawn Matthias. The full list of trades is below (or here if you prefer), and will be updated as things break on Twitter. Any moves the Rangers make will be bolded, and newer trades will be after the jump.

  • The Florida Panthers Jacob Markstrom and Shawn Matthias to Vancouver for Roberto Luongo, with Vancouver eating some salary, and Steven Anthony.
  • The Philadelphia Flyers traded Matt Mangene, a 2014 3rd round pick, and a 2015 2nd round pick for defenseman Andrew MacDonald of the Islanders.
  • The Montreal Canadiens sent a 2014 5th round pick to Florida for Mike Weaver.
  • Dustin Penner was sent from the Anaheim Ducks to the Washington Capitals for a 2014 4th round pick.
  • That 2014 4th round pick Anaheim acquired was used to acquire Stephane Robidas from the Dallas Stars. The pick can move to a 2014 3rd round pick if the Ducks make it to the Conference Finals.
  • Anaheim also sent Viktor Fasth to Edmonton for a 2014 5th round pick and a 2015 3rd round pick.
  • Edmonton then sent Ilya Bryzgalov to the Minnesota Wild for a 2014 4th round pick.
  • The Ottawa Senators sent Jeff Costello to Vancouver for Patrick Cullen.

2014 Olympics: USA doesn’t medal; Canada/Sweden open thread

The ice hockey tournament of the 2014 Winter Olympics comes to an end today, as Canada (Rick Nash) takes on Sweden (Henrik Lundqvist, Carl Hagelin) in the gold medal game at 7am. Yesterday, Team USA (Ryan McDonagh, Ryan Callahan, Derek Stepan) failed to show up against Finland, getting shut out 5-0 in the bronze medal game. With the loss, Team USA will not medal, closing out a disappointing Olympics.

Use this as your open thread for the Sweden/Canada game. Discuss whatever you want, just keep it civil.

Bronze medal game: USA/Finland open thread

Even though they lost to Canada in unimpressive fashion yesterday, Team USA can still win a medal today by beating the Finns and capturing the bronze. The Finns boast ex-Rangers Olli Jokinen, Lauri Kospikoski, and Jarkko Immonen, in addition to the a few stars (Tuukka Rask, Teemu Selanne, Kimmo Timmonen). The Finns don’t have much offensive punch, but they are probably the best defensive team in the Olympics this year. That stifling defense helped them beat Russia in the quarterfinals, and put up a good fight against Sweden in the semis.

Use this as your open thread for the game. Talk about anything you want, but keep it civil.

USA/Czech Republic Open Thread

Yesterday afternoon, the Czech Republic defeated one-time country-mates Slovakia by a score of 5-3 in the qualification round. That win set up today’s game in the quarterfinals against Team USA for a spot to face Canada (probably) in the semi-finals. The Czechs actually came into pool play as the third ranked team in the world. The US was ranked #7 by the IIHF. Entering the quarterfinals, Team USA is ranked third and the Czechs seventh. My how times have changed.

Use this to discuss the game. Team USA is the better team, but the Czechs are still a solid squad. If Latvia can beat the Swiss, then anything can happen.

2014 Olympics: USA/Russia open thread

This morning at 7:30, Team USA (with Rangers Ryan Callahan, Ryan McDonagh, and Derek Stepan) will take on Russia in a game that will likely determine the Group A winner. Since the winner of each pool is guaranteed a spot in the quaterfinals (along with the best record among the second place teams), this is clearly the most important game for both teams. Use this thread to talk about the game, the Olympics, or anything else you want to discuss at 7:30 on a Saturday morning.

The BSB Christmas Wishlist

What-do-you-4icmwi

This morning when the writers here at BSB checked under our trees, though grateful for our gifts and the two recent wins by the Rangers, there were a few more things we were hoping for. Some of these wishes are realistic, some unrealistic, but if Santa Sather is reading this, please take note.

Becky’s Wishlist

1) Marc Methot. There’s a reason that if you follow me on Twitter you know how much I love this guy. Methot is a veteran defensive defensiveman who throws his size (6’3, 230) around frequently to make beautiful checks. He’s the yin to Karlsson’s offensive yang on the Senators, and makes sure that when Karlsson’s defense slacks, the opposing team is covered. He’s got hip checks down to an art — even on the league’s most prized player — is surprisingly quick on his skates, and has started to produce offensively. A former Blue Jacket, he would fit in really well with his old friends in New York. At a $3M cap hit this year and next, this is doable – your move, Slats.

2) Alex Ovechkin. Could you imagine the mass spontaneous combustions that would occur if this ever happened? I know, I know – Ovie is the enemy, we all hate him, he’s the worst thing that’s ever happened, yada yada yada. At the end of the day, he is the elite player in the NHL. He is so offensively skilled and uses his body to protect the puck and hurt the opposing player. I would welcome him with open arms immediately, if not sooner.

Free agency open thread

Free agency is upon us, only four days late after a pointless lockout. Earlier this week, the Penguins locked up Kris Letang, and the Flyers signed both Mark Streit (acquired via trade from the Islanders) and Vinny Lecavalier (bought out by the Lightning). There are a lot of interesting names on the market, but the overall strength of this free agent class is weak.

As for the Rangers, they don’t have much room to work with, so don’t expect them to be active. Use this as your open thread for the day.

11:35am- Panthers re-sign Shawn Matthias, 2 years/$3.5m.

11:56am- Former Ranger Lauri Korpikoski re-signs in the desert, 4 years/$10 million to stay with the ‘Yotes. (stick tap, Tim B)

12:02pm- Evgeni Nabokov re-signs with Islanders, 1-year, $3.25 million.

12:07pm- Kyle Chipchura re-signs with Coyotes, terms yet to be disclosed.

12:11pm- Andrew Ference departs Boston to sign in Edmonton for 4 years, $3.25 million AAV ($13m total).

12:13pm- Islanders sign depth forward Peter Regin to 1 year, $750k deal.

12:14pm- Florida signs Joey Crabb to a 2 year/$1.2 million contract.

12:17pm- Alfredsson deal official in Detroit: 1 year, $5.5 million (including $2 million in bonuses).

12:18pm- Goalie carousel in Philly continues, Ray Emery signs for 1 year, $1.65 million.

12:24pm- Formers Sharks backup keeper Thomas Greiss signs 1 year deal in Arizona (750k).

The Ducks and the Red Wings (Series tied 1-1) start at 7:30pm on NBCSN. Finally, the Blues and Kings (Blues up 2-0) drop the puck at 10pm on NBCSN.
