Rangers fall in regulation to Isles as #TheVision continues

The Rangers and Islanders played a pretty competitive game last night, with the Isles coming out on top, 4-3 in regulation. This game started out heated, with emotions and almost fisticuffs galore. The teams exchanged quick goals, a fight broke out, the Isles added another, and that was before ten minutes had even passed.

Henrik Lundqvist faced just 20 shots, allowing four, two on the powerplay. Ice time was what was expected, I guess, with Pavel Buchnevich getting 10:03 of total ice time, third lowest on the team (Boo Nieves: 8:37, Cody McLeod: 7:40). For #TheVision, the Rangers lost in regulation, which is good. But losing to the Islanders is never fun. No one likes to lose to the Islanders. So that’s bad.

Rangers 1, Isles 0

This was pretty.

Isles 1, Rangers 1

Marc Staal and Neal Pionk went for a change as the Rangers turned the puck over. Matt Barzal had basically the entire offensive zone to come in. Brady Skjei and Adam McQuaid were on the ice, but this isn’t on them. Blame the bad change and the turnover.

Isles 2, Rangers 1

Cross ice pass, sure. But bad angle and Hank off his angle. He probably should have had this one.

Rangers 2, Isles 2

I couldn’t find a gif of this one, because apparently MSG Networks killed off NYR gif makers and then doesn’t pull their own weight in producing their own. But this was a great shot by Kevin Shattenkirk.

Isles 3, Rangers 2

You have to tap your stick to the Isles powerplay on this one, as they had the Rangers running around and got traffic in front. When there’s chaos, the puck goes in the net.

Rangers 3, Isles 3

This is a great play by Jesper Fast. He batted the puck out of the air, off the ice, and it bounced over Robin Lehner.

Isles 4, Rangers 3

Last minute goals are killer. Staal allows the cross ice pass, and I have no idea what Pionk was doing to defend Jordan Eberle. That was a weak stick check.

Shot Heatmap

As mentioned in the game thread, the Isles play low event hockey, and this was no different. The Rangers absolutely owned the last two periods, out shooting the Isles 34-14. Robin Lehner stood tall, though.

The Ranger and Isles tussle one more time on Saturday, and that concludes their matchup for the season. As much as #TheVision says lose in regulation, it’s the Islanders. Beat the Islanders, please.

"Rangers fall in regulation to Isles as #TheVision continues", 5 out of 5 based on 1 ratings.

Cut and paste this game for the rest of the year, with the same effort, and the same result.

I will be happy. One of the more entertaining games I’ve attended this year.

I kept counting down the minutes when the Isles would score on their first shot of the 3rd period. Lehner was good but it wasn’t like he stood on his head all game, the Rangers aren’t that skilled. But he did make 2 or 3 huge saves in the 3rd, so kudos to him.

I would like to ask Coach Ruff what he is thinking when he watches Pionk play “defense.” I would really love to know what he thinks about that.

It did appear though that the Rangers finally figured out that the Claesson-Shatty pairing is a good one, based on minutes. But they can’t seem to get it through their thick heads that Staal-Pionk, or “Stank” or “Stink” or whichever nickname you want to give that pair, is about as bad as they could be. But they keep trotting them out there, it is good for the tank, so there’s that.

“Ordinary Hank” usually = Ranger loss.

Zucs falling prior to the Isles 4th goal didn’t help, but agree Pionk looked like a recycled pylon allowing the crushing goal…….Some people think I’m nuts, but this is a controlled tank job……..I saw at least 7 different Ranger players with golden opportunities just freeze and then get taken out of the play…..really weird..As much as I hate to lose…I hope they lose there way into the top 2 draft position….this team really needs an elite player or two…..and also hoping that Kratsov, Igor the goalie, K’Andre, Rykov and the youngsters that are struggling in Hartford develop into good players….if they don’t and the young players bomb out….then I could see this franchise free falling for many years…….

I don’t think that the Ranger players are intentionally not performing, A) they’re just not that good and B) because they’re not that good, the confidence level is not that high. Ever see Ovi pass up a shot? lol

The rest, it is what it is. I’m done speculating what they will do because we have no control over it anyway. But I will say this, until Gorton gets full control, in earnest, and Sather is out of the picture, this team is going no where. Sather is not capable of building an NHL team in this era.

Having Staal, Quaid, McCleod, etc. out there just proves it. And being “dazzled” by Pionk’s pts, which BTW have slipped dramatically lately, also proves it. I am really starting to believe that the Rangers’ management and coaching do not know what true defending looks like, so how can they pass it along to the players? Ruff has to go too, enough.

BTW, I thought the report of Hayes wearing a “no contact” jersey yesterday for practice was pretty funny.

And we know why the PK stinks so bad. First 2 guys who skate out are Staal and Pionk. I don’t know who DQ can pair Pionk with. Staal is killing him.

Staal may be killing Pionk but Pionk stinks too. What was he doing on that Bailey goal? What was he looking at? Having your back to the puck is usually not a good idea for a D man.

Skjei helped run that special teams down to the ground. Zib has been apart of the most goals against on the PK and his faceoff skills in the last three games have been terrible, I believe he has averaged 40%

“Ordinary Hank” usually = Ranger loss.

Ordinary Hank would mean a loss for most teams. I think his save percentage over the last eleven games is under .880. And at least half of Dave’s writeups have at least one goal Hank would like back.

Lundqvist is not an elite goalie. At this stage of his career, he is a streaky goalie. He can still do it, as witnessed by what we saw in October and November, but he can’t sustain it. This has been true for years, but the bad stretches are getting longer and more severe. Actually, the length his three month brilliant run last year was an outlier by recent standards.

Henrik is not the problem with this team. The problem is insuffucient talent. BUT he is keeping people from thinking rationally – and you cannot improve a team without clear thinking.

I like “Stank” for those two. There is the obvious meaning, but also you have “tank” in there.

I will say, one of the only ways a coach could kinda-sorta-sneakily assist a tank is with wonky deployment and/or a system or certain aspects of a system that the roster at hand just can’t handle. That wasn’t what AV was doing, obviously, and I will also say that I don’t think that is what Quinn is doing here either, unfortunately. It is technically possible though, I suppose.

At this point, I’m not at all ready to turn on Quinn…but assuming this isn’t some sly work to drop in the standings, I think we’ve seen enough of coaches who have issues identifying and correcting systemic blue line problems. The roster obviously is not very good on that side of the ice, but come on now. I feel like it’s time for Gorton (assuming he will not be relieved of his duties this summer) to get a strong defensive coordinator in there who is empowered to actually run the show on that side of the ice. If Quinn doesn’t like that, well, I’m sure he knows how to get back to Boston from NYC – he’s certainly not shown us so far that he is irreplaceable. Again, not turning on him fully…but I think it’s safe to say he’s disappointed many of us so far who were looking for a breath of fresh air. Kinda feels like recycled airplane air, so far.

That was a tough one, but you knew that 4th goal was going to come on a defensive miscue and a slam dunk goal. Despite 4 goals against I actually thought Hank looked much better. The last 2 goals he didn’t really have much of a chance and I disagree with Dave on the 2nd one which looked to tick off the sliding Pionk and change direction. But yeah, as Richter said, he was ordinary which means they lose. Speaking of Pionk, he really needs to sit because that was a rough game. Lehner had a great 3rd complemented by some puck luck. Let’s see if they can bounce back Saturday. Hope to see Georg in net and Pionk on the bench. Otherwise status quo.

I disagree on Pionk , Sittoo sit Staal and let the kid play. He’s gonna make mistakes. Now if he keeps making them over and over different story. Staal 3 steps behind the game now. The whole stick checking crap is over , you gotta take the body. No I don’t mean big hard body checks. Just engage which he can’t do cause most just skate past. Pionk has some speed. Does he play D very well? Nope. Does the other guy who we paid a home town discount contract play D? Pionk is way cheaper along with ADA.

Rivalry game at home with the Islanders, Martin and Johnston are flying around like @ssholes, where the hell is McQuade? I thought Brashear I mean McQuade was brought here for his toughness and to protect his teammates. Even the fight with Reaves was a joke… Reaves engages him and McQuade throws a few cursory shots then goes down like a sack of hockey pucks. But again, maybe I’m wrong Sather probably convinced Gorton to bring him in here for his great defense. I can’t wait til they ship this guy the heck out too.

Quaider hasn’t been used to defending a entire team’s integrity before. You know he played with guy’s like Lucic? He’s not use to seeing power forwards like Kreids skate aimlessly without a purpose shift after shift.

The game was played reasonably well, and that’s what we all wanted isn’t it?

The controlled dive continues, and we fell further down the line, and closer to the Hughes, Kakko lottery pick.

Brooks wrote that maybe they should send Chytle, Howden, and Georgiv down the the AHL for a period of time to build up their confidence, maybe not a bad idea. It appears that everyone is seeing the limitations of Pionk, and that he should ride the pine for at least a game, or two. I’d also like to see Staal sit a few, he really isn’t doing anything for us at this point.

Good post Walt, I agree..And I usually don’t agree with Brooks. I cannot tell you how many Ranger fan friends of mine are up in arms over Quinn and Gorton…Some questioning if Quinn is a good coach or his teaching is BS……..and I can understand the dangers of rebuilds..especially in the NHL….where many times doesn’t work…..my belief is this: we had a nice run where we came up short a few times…It was time to move on..trade some of the players for pick…prospects…currently many of our prospects in Hartford are now wowing anyone…..but as posted previously….I would be plenty MORE concerned if Igor the goalie, Kratsov, K’andre, Rykov and the other become busts…

Good morning everyone! Long time reader and first time post-er…
I think it would be good for the development of the team for the young guys to go to the AHL and learn to win together. I know that Hartford is a shi show as well but I would like this rebuild to resemble the ones done in Toronto and Winnipeg and desperately try to avoid doing it like Edmonton and Arizona have failed. Their young players were rushed to the big leagues and have not developed well at all. None of our young guys are ready for a full NHL schedule and have run out of gas. Call up Beleskey, Holland, Tokarski and guys with no long term future with the team and let Chytil, Howden and Andersson play 18-20 minutes a night on the farm. Jeff Gorton needs to sell, sell, sell early and often. Zucc, Hayes, Vesey, Buch, Namestnikov, all the defensemen and when do you think Hank will get tired of being lit up every night? Do you think he re-thinks being moved this summer?

You got that right Tanto. I figured that ADA was going to miss last night’s game after he took that dumb penalty in the previous game. But, when he got back on the ice at the end of that game after being benched for a while, the kid was driving the offense. Seems like he is getting Clendo’d when he has much better skills than that guy. I think he needs to play and Slow Motion McQuaid can’t be shipped out fast enough. But whatever, what do I know!

I think benching ADA for that penalty was really bush league. Just as you don’t want mistakes to slide, you also don’t want to make players tentative by punishing them for every error. Especially when the standard applies to just one or two players.

At this point, I think the Rangers should send Pionk to Hartford and call up Bigras. Pionk is not subject to waivers and so the move is harmless and the kid needs to get away from the idea that giving up lots of goals is just normal. He needs the experience of actually being a good defenseman, an experience he is not getting in NY. Meanwhile, Bigras has a good pedigree and is having a good year. The Rangers should find out what they have there. It probably is nothing but you don’t find any diamonds if you don’t turn over any rocks.

Ironically, Quinn has given numerous forwards at Hartford a trial in NY despite the fact that there really isn’t any talent there, while we have seen the same eight defensemen all year despite the fact that there are interesting players in Hartford. The waiver situation has been allowed to severely handicap the Rangers.
