Rangers name five players as alternate captains

The Rangers will be foregoing a captain this season, naming five players as alternate captains instead: Chris Kreider, Mats Zuccarello, Jesper Fast, Mika Zibanejad, and Marc Staal.

Zuccarello and Staal had A’s last season, so they come as no surprise. The new leadership group’s biggest surprise is Zibanejad, who is by far the alternate with the least amount of time in New York. It shows how much they value him.

As for Kreider and Fast, Kreider was expected by me. Fast is one of those players that does everything the coach wants and never takes a shift off. That’s the kind of leader a coach likes.

Staal will wear the ‘A’ for all 82 games. Zibanejad and Zuccarello will wear the ‘A’ at home, and Fast/Kreider will wear the ‘A’ on the road.

"Rangers name five players as alternate captains", 3 out of 5 based on 8 ratings.

Shatty here too short of a time, Buch barely speaks English and Chytil has 10 days of experience. Hayes should have been named over Zibanejad if we wanted to show him some love – we didn’t. He is a goner at the trade deadline if not before.

And Kreider has what, one more year left after this season? Zib has 3 more seasons? Skjei has 5 more years left and has been praised by management that he’s a leader. No letter for him? Bye bye Mr. Skjei

Yeah I’m going to go with what JG, Quinn said and now Sather who also expects Hayes to sign here long term. Once again I don’t agree with the way you think but I’m more than cool to wait and see how the chips fall. I been on the other side of this topic since 2016 after his slump year, JT vs Hayes 2 yr contracts, all last year, before 2018 deadline and draft. As I always say, we will see how this plays out but I don’t think Hayes is going anywhere, not especially now with ex coaches and a family friend as a head coach during a prove it contract. I thought the love was there for everyone in the management to let the hockey world know that both sides plan to come back to negotiations.

We have at least 3 young centers ready to take on the #2 center role by next season. That doesn’t even count Names, who has a contract for next year. Zibby is being coddled, and Chytil, Howden and Andersson will round out the bottom 3 center positions. Hayes gets you a second rounder in a deep draft. We undoubtedly make that move, save some future money and prepare to go to battle with youth. Hayes is a good player, but will be the odd man out.

            Let the rebuild continue.

Besides, we will need Haye’s money for Panarin!

The whole second line could be gone at the trade deadline. Hayes, Zucc & Vesey

In my opinion this is the first negative of the coach.

Absolutely – he should have named Lias Andersson, DeAngelo and Chytil has the captains. In fact everyone over 23 years old should be traded or released.

Better yet he should tell the coach to give it to someone else. If he doesn’t think Kreider is the best player on the team not including the goalie then give it to whom he thinks it is. He is not an A he is a C!

A little surprised that it’s Staal who wears the “A” every game. Personally would have preferred that it was Kreider, or in the alternative that they added Shattenkirk to the list and alternate the 3 “A”s every other game.

I feel like Staal’s ‘A’ is almost the ‘C’ and with this in mind, perhaps giving this full time ‘A’ wasn’t the right move, let’s not forget the moment McD had the ‘C’ placed, it seemed to burden him a little.

Not saying that a coach who doesn’t enter the room didn’t contribute to McD possible being to burdened, just saying perhaps CoachQuinn left he didn’t want to rush the C and possible burden a players growth.

it is his specialty… Stall is a fine choice and commands good respect…

      it didn’t hurt anyone… IMO

Not so surprising if you think about the fact that Staal is the only defenseman and they wanted to have a defenseman wear a letter every game. It would also have been reasonable to follow your plan and give Shattenkirk an A, but he has almost no Ranger history. I think however that Staal wears the A every game because Shatty doesn’t have one and not Shatty doesn’t get a letter so Staal can wear it every game.

Than the 6th could have been Skjei instead of Shattenkirk — bottom line, if Staal doesn’t fit into the plans moving forward then he shouldn’t have gotten the “permanent” A on his sweater.

Whatever his skill level these days, Marc Staal is still someone who doesn’t take a shift off and commands respect. I’d rather that he got lots of rest days so the young people might play, and perhaps be groomed to be an assistant when he hangs up the skates. But he deserves the ‘A’.

Smart: Ryan McDonagh is a poor Captain he’s too quiet, doesn’t show any passion!

Smarter: Henrik Lundqvist shouldn’t be a team leaders, he’s too vocal and shows too much passion!

I’m not bothered by whoever they decided to give letters, because I don’t really think it matters that much, honestly. That said, 5 A’s does seem a bit silly.
