The NHL season is over. Alex Ovechkin has finally lifted a Stanley Cup. The NHL Draft is a few weeks away. This is going to be the calm before the storm. There will be theories. There will be speculation. There will be spitballing. There will be rumors. It’s going to be a fun time.

For me, I enjoy spending time thinking about how the Rangers can maximize on their current assets for the rebuild without completely tanking next season. They can’t tank with Henrik Lundqvist in net, he’s just too good. His in game performances alone mean they won’t finish below the bottom feeders. So we can kiss that theory goodbye.

However the Rangers still have a bunch of assets that can be used to fetch prospects and picks. Mats Zuccarello, Chris Kreider, and possibly Kevin Shattenkirk, if they go this route. Cap space is also an asset that can be used to get a prospect or a pick.

They have oodles of picks this year, with many in the first three rounds. They can use these to perhaps pry a Jacob Trouba from Winnipeg, if that option is still there. There are a ton of question marks on the blue line, so I can see Jeff Gorton looking to make a move for an immediate fix. I can also see him waiting to see what David Quinn can get out of Brady Skjei, John Gilmour, Neal Pionk, and Tony DeAngelo.

We still don’t have any assistants for Quinn, other than perhaps Lindy Ruff. That news will come at some point as well. We may also finally get news on what Ruff’s role for next year will be.

I, for one, am excited that teams can finally start making trades and begin their offseasons in earnest. Quinn was just the first of many moves the Rangers will make. It’s going to be interesting, all the way through July 1. Buckle up, Rangers fans.
