Rangers recall Alex Georgiev

The Rangers have recalled goalie Alex Georgiev from the Hartford Wolf Pack. This is not a youth movement call up, like Neal Pionk or John Gilmour. This is to replace the newest member to the walking wounded, Ondrej Pavelec. Pavelec left last night’s game with a knee injury, forcing Henrik Lundqvist to play the final two periods.

Gerogiev, a 22 year old from Russia, has a .908 SV% and a 2.97 GAA. He had a bad start to the year, and has played better of late. I’m not sure his numbers are a true indication of his talent, since the Pack haven’t really been that good this season.

The Pavelec injury means Hank likely gets the majority of the starts on the upcoming four game road trip.

Not just “better” of late, but a lot better of late. I remember not too long ago he was sporting about an .890 save %. It will be interesting to see if he gets any time in goal at all, but I think it makes some sense to see what he’s capable of unless management really believes resigning Pavlec is a good idea.

I would try and see if Raata would come back with a guarantee he would get at least 30 games .

He’s doing enough this year on a terrible Coyotes team to earn a new contract and the #1 job there, why would he want to come back to NY for peanuts, 30 games and a rebuild?

The real goaltending prospect is playing for Russia in the Olympics now.

Of course, but we’ll still need a backup for him in a few years and Georgiev is only 21. Then again Huska or Wall might be ready by then as well.
