Game 15: Make it three in a row

jt miller jussi jokinen

For the first time all season, the Rangers enter tonight’s game against Florida after winning two in a row. A win tonight makes it a winning streak. That’s big for the Rangers, as they dug themselves so deep a hole that they needed the two wins to barely stay above the magic number of three.

The good news is that the Panthers are a mess. The better news is that the Rangers played a very good game against Tampa, one with great process that can be built upon. The best news is that a win tonight puts the Rangers just one point out of a wild card spot, and in a much better position to rebound from their horrendous start. These are all good things. Despite how we feel about certain players/coaches, we all want the team to win and succeed.

Panthers Systems

Bob Boughner is the new guy in Florida. I know nothing of his systems.

I dont recall his brief Rangers pre-season tenure, but he spent 2015-16 in Hartford. Then got a PTO with the Devils and spent all of last year in Albany and couldn’t crack the the NHL on a bad NHL Devils team.

This year, at age 29, he’s having a remarkable start to his season. Maybe he’s a late bloomer. Or maybe this is just a fluke. I don’t think that’s an indictment of the Rangers or all 29 other NHL teams that didnt think much of him either.

Neither goalie played that well…….Hanks play reminded me of the finals against the kings when he lost 3rd period leads in 3 different games!
But, on the bright side maybe now AV will PLAY JT MILLER AT CENTER AND LEAVE HIM THERE!!!!!!!!!!!!
AND please no more talk about trading Miller or Kreider or Buch or Vesey!
      Consider them untouchable!
Why doesnt Hayes, who is terrific with the puck and a great passer not used on the power play?
Still would like a winger who likes to throw his weight around.

Rich…your new name is Mr. Hyperbole! Why dont we actually wait until Miller, Kreider, Buch and Vesey, oh, I don’t know, actually ACCOMPLISH something before we consider them untouchable? They’re playing well right now, and that’s great. But untouchable? Uh, no. Few players on this team could or should be considered untouchable.

Now as for your mischarterizatioins of 2014, Hank was brilliant vs the Kings. He was the only reason we were even in those games. You are incredibly ungrateful and being factually inaccurate to blame him for the loss when it was our putrid offense that failed us time and time again in that series.

Eddie, in regards to 2014, with out Hank we do not get a sniff in 2014. In that CUP final he was very good, but Jonathan Quick was better. the BIGGEST disappointment and total no show was Rick Nash, if he delivered any type of production ( his contract say’s he is an elite player) we win that year!!!!!!

Come on 3E…Using your logic Austin Matthews and Connor Mcdavid would not be untouchable since they have not ACCOMPLISHED anything either!
There is no way you would get close to equal value for these guys who are young, fast, skilled, physical, [ kreider, miller]
proven 20+ goal scorers , carry puck end to end, go into corners, can and do sometimes take over a game ….and on reasonable contracts…..
Trade either and we watch another Mike Ridley or Rick Middleton excel on another team for the next 10 years!!!!!!!!

            Let’s see….

McDavid—Art Ross, Ted Lindsay, Hart, NHL First Team All-Star

            Matthews-Calder, NHL All Rookie

You’re right. Those two haven’t accomplished anything. Really no different than Miller, Hayes and Kreider who combined, haven’t even made an all-star team.

You once again are misunderstanding what I am saying. I’m not saying the Rangers SHOULD trade them. I’m saying let’s see if they can actually deliver some level of sustained excellence, something none of our “Trilpets” have ever done. Hayes and Miller get new contracts after this season. They won’t come cheap. Decisions will have to be made.

No one is saying trade them for crap, or repeat those awful deals. In a cap world, I doubt those deals could happen today. But a good GM is always looking at options. And if there’s a way to address the center issue, or upgrade on defense, you consider just about anything. That’s all I’m saying.

And please, for the love of all that is hockey, STOP making these so far unremarkable players into something they are not until they actually demonstrate otherwise!

If I remember correctly when Hank first arrived he was average, at best, nothing special. When the rangers added Girardi and McDonagh and strallman and klein and the forwards arrived callahan, dubinsky, anisimov and tortorellas defensive system then Hank became a top goalie……..now as the game has opened up and we no longer have a great defensive team, he is facing more difficult shots and more overall. And he is 35.
He has been a great ranger, an all time great ranger, but the last 3 years have not been his best!!!!

      • Nov 5, 2017 at 12:47 am
        Permalink

        False again Mr. Hyperbole!

Hank was terrific when he first arrived. So much so that he almost immediately forced Renney to make him the number one in short order. Average at best? Weekes himself said the guy was brilliant from day one. Totally wrong!

Certainly, as Hank matured he got better and better, no argument there. But to say the guys you mentioned above….mostly average non-memorable players that will hardly live in the annals of NHL history…that THEY were the reason he started to become a top goalie? OMG! You truly have gone delusional.

You are right about one thing… the defense has gotten weaker the last season or two and Hank has faced more high danger shots the last season plus…and he’s older and not the same guy he was when he was in his prime. Well done Captain Obvious! You got that one right!

Then you conclude by saying that, after you rip him, he’s an all time great Ranger? Why would you say that when you said he was average at best and his success was due mostly because of a bunch of no-stars? You are all over the map my friend. Which is it?

And then you conclude by saying the last THREE years have not been his best? He had one off year….last year. That’s it. Look it up. And stop with the mischacterizations of reality Mr. H!

I am not a big believer in goalie value…..look at the last 5 or 6 cup winning goalies….anti neimmi, cam ward, corey crawford/scott darling, marc fluery………..IMHO give me a great forward or two rather than a great goalie, thats what wins cups!!!!!

That’s great. And if we had players like Kane, Crosby, Malkin, etc, and the choice was to sign Hank or one of them, then sure, I’m with you. You go with the elite forwards.

The problem for the Rangers, and the reason this franchise has had so little success in terms of winning Cups, is that our drafting since the inception of the draft has been terrible, especially in terms of elite forwards. We’ve never even once drafted a HOF forward. Never.

What I don’t understand is why you would punish Hank for that. That’s what I don’t get. What should the Rangers have done differently in 2013 when they signed Hank that would have yielded a different result? I’ll save you the time…there was no other move to make. Signing Hank was the only decision and the correct decision.

I amnot sure if we drafted him or if he is in the HOF….Jean Ratelle ??
The only thing we could have done different back then would have been to NOT TRADE dubinsky, anisomov, tutin for nash……and then later , not sure of time frame, callahan , two #1s for st louis …..yes I know when his mother died the team responded ……we went to the finals…..but neither st louis nor nash helped us get a cup…….
I agree we HAD to sign lunquist……but I maintain, goalies dont win cups…..

Rangers got Ratelle before the inception of the draft.

The Nash deal was a gamble, but it was the right move to make at the time. We would have continued to stumble along as a borderline playoff team. We needed a guy who was a star. He was a star. Unfortunately, his star faded.

And if it hadn’t been Nash, those guys would have been dealt for someone else. No way in a cap world we could have kept all of them.

Cally for St. Louis was a no brainer. You take your chance and go for it. MSL was tremendous. Cally was a solid player but there’s no the Rangers would have re-signed him anyway. Too much money for not enough return.

You cant be that black and white on these things….if it doesnt deliver a Cup then it was a bad trade. That’s silly. Those two seasons, AV’s first two, were two of the most exciting in Rangers history, They have ZERO chance of happening if the Nash and MSL deals aren’t made.

And as for the number ones we traded to TB….the Bolts turned around and dealt them anyway. When you are close, you go for it. If all you do is play for the future, then you are doomed to perpetual mediocrity.

I for one am thrilled that the guys bailed out Henrik in this one. And yes Sieveqvist and Leather, Hank should have stopped at least one, if not both, of the last 2 goals. But he didn’t and they still won because the team is starting to play as a team. What a game for Shattenkirk and a lot of others. Kreider a monster, Grabs with a sweet goal, and Nash with a tremendous deflection. I like what I’m seeing for the first time all year even with Hank being “leaky” at the end… LGR!
