Game 13: Scary night against Vegas

October 31, 2017, by

oscar lindberg

The Rangers face the Vegas Golden Knights for the first time in history tonight. But that’s not the story. Apparently Alain Vigenault is on a game-to-game leash. Apparently there is a ton of smoke around Montreal and the Rangers. And apparently four big-wigs took in that Montreal/Ottawa game last night after being at Rangers/Montreal over the weekend. Something is brewing.

To the task at hand: The Rangers need two points desperately. A win keeps them under the four point threshold we’ve been talking about all month. A loss has them at five points out, which is a hole that could be too deep to climb out. This is a good spot to get points, as Vegas is on there 120th string goalie and on the second of a back to back.

Vegas Systems

Gerard Gallant is the man in Vegas. I haven’t watched them closely yet, but while in Florida, Gallant ran a 1-2-2 forecheck, which was used aggressively or conservatively pending the game situation (e.g., the score, puck location, etc.). In the defensive zone, he ran a straight up zone defense. For special teams, ran a standard umbrella power play and diamond force/box penalty kill system.

I’d expect this to be the same for Vegas.

  1. Bobby B says:

Prediction , Hat Trick for Lindberg, who then autograph’s the puck and gift wraps it to Gorton!!!

  2. Jerry says:

    Vegas is starting
    The starting goaltender’s back up’s, backup’s, backup.
    So a fourth tier goalie.

We might actually be able to win this one.

  3. SalMerc says:

    LGR
If the team wants to win for AV it is there for them.
If they lose, even they want AV gone.

Simple as the first 5 minutes to tell.

    • Ray says:

Forget AV. It’s a rebuilding year. If the players want the coach gone, get rid of them. Having two coaches depart in less than five years because they couldn’t hold the room tells me that there are bad apples in the room.

      • Reenavipul says:

According to Business insider from a year ago, the average NHL coach lasts 3 years, the median 1.5

Haven’t had a bad apple since Avery.

        • Jerry says:

Well, Dan Boyle comes to mind.

        • Ray says:

There’s a difference between noticing that a coach isn’t getting what he should out of his players and the players actually telling you. Yes, some coaches can motivate better than others, but when the guys are dogging it, they need to go, not the guy they are trying to embarrass.

          • Reenavipul says:

You can’t fire the team in a world of guaranteed contracts, and I haven’t seen anybody dogging it like Pirri did last year. I see cascades of mistakes. I see the team come out flat. I see a team that can’t string together 60 minutes of hockey. Either this group of players has gotten forgotten the system over the years or the coaching staff has saddled them with too much new info to process over the summer.

But the routine flatness means leadership can’t motivate and the coaches need to step up. For better or worse, they haven’t. Always try and coach em up, but you put a boot in their ass for lack of effort effort until the effort deemed necessary becomes repeatable. It’s commendable that AV expects pros to be pros, but they’re also human.

  4. Chris F says:

    Vegas has a mediocre blueline.

And Fluery, Subban, and Dansk are injured.

Legace is their 4th string goaltender, and gave up 4 goals on 11 shots against the Isles.

    No excuses tonight.

  5. Leatherneck says:

    juicy rebound there Leaky

  6. Leatherneck says:

Rangers defense is a tire fire

  7. pas44 says:

    Where is Zucc’s “A”

    did i miss something

  8. pas44 says:

Rick Nash is amazing, Oscar Lindberg only has 5 goals, Rick has 1

  9. Leatherneck says:

another outstanding rebound…He’s washed up…really is time to unload him

  10. Reenavipul says:

Fat rebound offered up by Hank.

  11. Chris F says:

Hank’s the only reason we’re still in this game. What game are you Hellen Kellers watching?

  12. King Sieveqvist ! King Sieveqvist ! King Sieveqvist ! says:

Need a goalie still and a coach … Lol … Couple of big dramatic saves he brought on his own

  13. Leatherneck says:

You Leaky fans…it’s ok…1 st phase is called denial…it’ll get easier

  14. Peter says:

Hate that he is doing it against the Rangers, but good for Lindbergh. Good hockey player who comes to play.

  15. Mikeyyy says:

I hate to say it but the king is looking like the court jester here. With two good goalies in he wings. It’s time to dump and run. That’s a LOT of cap space to play with.

  16. Leatherneck says:

Rasmus Dahlin please….and a couple of other 1st round picks in hauls for Leaky, Zuke, McD, Nash and Zuke

    New coach

    This team is done

  17. Reenavipul says:

Everybody on the PPseems to do that back pass to the moving D, but nobody does it better than Frolunda. They wait until the forecheckers really commit, then dish it to the D who is really coming at them with speed.

  18. Leatherneck says:

4th strin goalie out performing our so called star goalie…..comical

  19. Leatherneck says:

    Haha….another one….showing he’s done….he used to stop penalty shots a ton….now every penalty shot shoot out….goes in

  20. Bloomer says:

Lundqvist made a great save on the giveaway/breakaway. Couldn’t squeeze the pads together and the puck leaked through the five hole. 4-2 Vegas.

  21. King Sieveqvist ! King Sieveqvist ! King Sieveqvist ! says:

I’m not saying anything ….. lol

  22. Leatherneck says:

Rangers looking like the expansion team…lol

  23. Reenavipul says:

Two of those goals against(Smith failing to cover his brother, McDonagh faling to cover) off the top of my head were due to the overload system biting them in the ass as the pursuing D was coming back from the other side of the ice while strong side D is screening the near post.

  24. James Carr says:

Will someone, anyone, on this blog start getting on Krieder Hayes and Miller…these guys were supposed to be the next group to carry this team and they all look lost.

    • Bloomer says:

Goal from Krieder the guy we not suppose to like.

    • Reenavipul says:

What planet are you watching the game from?

I’ve literally yelled at Kreider to keep his stick down, look what happens when he does that.

  25. Bloomer says:

Vegas double minor make it count ranjas.

  26. Leatherneck says:

Both Kreids and Buch goals were a thing of beauties

    • Leatherneck says:

discipline problems leading to penalties and a bad bounce gave us life so now if they don’t close this it points to a far worse problem than just poor defense and goal-tending

  27. Chris F says:

    Fuxkin’ great shift by Skjei!

Great recovery to break up the 2-on-1 pass. Then battles along the boards behind the net, fights through traffic to get the puck out of the slot, generates a coast to coast rush, and draws a penalty. Atta boy!

    • Chris F says:

I posted this before Joe’s little spiel after the commercial break by the way.

  28. Bloomer says:

Just don’t give up any shots on goal from here on and you can take this one Rangers.

  29. King Sieveqvist ! King Sieveqvist ! King Sieveqvist ! says:

    This team is Scary

  30. Chris F says:

    Big sigh of relief.

    That’s all I got.

  31. Leatherneck says:

The noose around AV’s neck loosened…the wind strengthened the thin ice AV was walking on…metaphors….blah

    • Reenavipul says:

3rd period comeback on a team that was on the 2nd night of a B2B and a 4th string goalie; who’da thunk it?

      • Bloomer says:

The Ranger team rally in the 3rd to earn the W. But the game will go down in history as another in which Lundqvist carried the team on his back.
