The Baby Rangers topped the Baby Blackhawks by a score of 3-2 in the Traverse City Tournament opener this year. Malte Stromwall had a goal and an assist. Gabriel Fontaine had a pair of assists. Ryan Gropp and Sean Day  each had a goal, while Ty Running added an assist. Chris Nell made 28 saves.

The Rangers are up against Carolina next, with puck drop at 3:30 today. Here’s the lineup for that game:

A shame that the Swedes are out of the lineup as they both played well, but I guess the boys in Hartford gotta get an extended look.

Lettieri tried to pull some moves that won’t fly even at this tourney, let alone the A.

All D were better than Gilmour was last year, Crawley was a pleasant surprise.

If one wants a great example of score effects, yesterday was it. DeBrincat did nothing and had 2sog after 40, then finished with 1g,1a and 6 shots after the Rangers took their foot off the gas.

This being shown on MSG or maybe some other channel?

Is Sean Day really 231 lbs? That’s hugh.

I heard that Pionk was very good.

Today or in general? He’s been competent at the AHL level, been muscled off the puck a few times, once by Martin Necas, an 18 yr old. He’s looked to hit, which takes him out of the play in his own end. To think that he’s gonna compete for a roster spot on Broadway is ludicrous though.

In general. Guess you’re not a fan, lol.

Just calling it like I’ve seen it the last two days. Guys who are NHL ready should be jumping out at you, he isn’t.

He’s been Calle Andersson for me.

Berezgalov is not a sure thing for a roster spot. He has had more than a few Kovalev length shifts where he’s had chances to change but doesn’t, has led to goals and scoring chances. His partners are definitely not helping, though.

Kotyk has been a bit of a train wreck today, trying to do way too much rather than let the game come to him.

The forwards are what’s keeping the ice tilted against the Rangers. The bottom six are just getting caved.

    • Richter1994 says:

Berezgalov will make the team just to keep him here.

Considering how Gorton likes to bank cap credits, Fast’s injury (and the need to replace him) and Berezgalov’s play, I can’t really see him starting the season on the roster.

Maybe he progresses through camp, but it’s an awful big learning curve in two weeks. He has nice stickwork, good positioning in his own end; but he won’t get off the ice, tough as room temperature butter and his skating is average.

On the bright side, Gropp has gone to the net, can now fight through checks along the wall and is responsible defensively.

        • Richter1994 says:

I always look at the alternatives: Staal and Holden. I would gladly accept the learning curve for the young D men.

          Good to hear about Gropp.

          • Reenavipul says:

If Staal has a clear head(and that’s a tough thing to comment on before camp starts) he’s miles better, same goes for Holden.

If you move Holden(which doesn’t look like it’s happening soon) or Staal goes down due to concussion(a matter of time unfortunately) then he’s 1st call up as they would rather have Day slide another year in a perfect world. But Day is a better defender even now.

          • Ray says:

Of course, to predict what will happen, your opinion doesn’t matter – only JG and AV. AV’s default is Staal and Holden – If Reenavipul says Pionk and Bereglazov aren’t going to take their jobs from what he’s seeing (with a kinder eye than AV), they are not making the team.

            • Richter1994 says:

If AV’s default is Staal and Holden then he won’t make the end of his extension.

Love the thumblinas who add nothing to the discussion.
