No surprises as Rangers’ protection list announced

Per Sean Hartnett, the Rangers do not have any surprises in their expansion protected list. They went with the 7-3-1 model:

This means Oscar Lindberg, Jesper Fast, Michael Grabner, and Antti Raanta will be exposed. The Rangers will lose one of those guys, which is a manageable loss. Nick Holden was obviously the sub-in for Dan Girardi, who has been bought out.

Skjei is automatically protected along with Buch & Vesey correct?

  2. Stevesse says:

Check out complete list on nhl.com. Looks like Raanta might not be picked. Fleury waived NMC and LV needs to meet minimum salary. Got to be their pick.

  3. Al Hirschen says:

The NHL salary cap for the 2017 2018 season is now officially $75 million

  4. Peter says:

Those four players all had good seasons for the Rangers last season. I’ll be sorry to see one of them go.

  5. Rich S says:

Was hopeful after we bought out Girardi ……thought we were moving in right direction….However-
Why do we protect Stepan and Holden . two players who absolutely stunk in the playoffs and regular season .????????
We now could lose either 27 Goal Grabner, Lindberg or Fast…….or Smith who should have been resigned and left holden exposed….
DOES GORTON WATCH THE RANGERS PLAY?????????????????????
BONEHEAD MOVES…….Exposing terrific young players, leading goal scorer and team mvp …………to protect Daisy???? and Holden???????
    another Strallman off season!!!

    • Spozo says:

Who would you have protected instead of Holden?

      • Rich S says:

Brad Park, Rod Seiling, Harry Howell……..anyone!

Leave him unprotected and maybe vegas takes him and we dont lose grabner, fast or lindberg……

Gorton needed to make a move before he was forced to protect a horrible defenseman………he should have traded stepan for a defenseman worthy of being protected!!! Wasted Move !

        • Spozo says:

Do you realize how expansion actually works? Either they protect 8 skaters or 7 forwards and 3 defensemen. They had to protect another defenseman after Staal and Mcdonagh. Holden was the only option. There is no scenario where you protect Grabner while leaving Holden exposed.

          • Rich S says:

            Spozo,

I would have protected anyone else-clendening, kampher etc just in the hope that they [vegas] grabs holden and we dont lose a valuabe asset-grabner, lindberg etc
            Now, you capishe?

    • Kris says:

Leaving Stepan unprotected would be a terrible decision. Do you realize that Stepan is one birth year older than both lindberg and fast? Stepans trade value is enough reason to keep him. Leaving a top pair guy unprotected while protecting a third/fourth liner is terrible asset management.

Why sign smith, when you can just wait until after the draft to do so? Maybe Smith wants too much and this is Gortons way of lowering his price, by saying ok well go on with out you.

      • Spozo says:

        This is a losing battle.

      • Reenavipul says:

June 90 vs October & December 91(Hayes is 23 months younger)

You expose Stepan because you want to lose his salary and you couldn’t trade him before the roster freeze.

        • ANGRY WIENER DOG STAMPEDE says:

Honestly, anyone who comes on here posting stuff like ‘esphose stephann’ should have their head examined.

WHY THE HELL would you take a 1C (not repeating this; him being in the top 30 among centers in scoring is not an opinion) and just…. give them away…?

You know, they could just… you know… trade him…?

And no, he’s not overpaid; ~ 8-10 points is about what you get per $1 million spent on the cap. IF anything, he’s one of the few players currently who is paid appropriately relative to what they do.

Also, the notion that the ‘freed up cap space’ (lol) would actually have an effect – whom are you giving said cap space to that could do what Stepan does? Jumbo Joe Thornton? Seriously, do you guys think that there is some imaginary rink in the sky from which replacement UFAs will magically float down from to come play for us?

It literally makes no sense. It’s like you’re seriously attempting to argue that 2 + 2 == 22 or something equally as unfathomable. The sick part is, I will be very upset if he’s not shipped off this summer…. but not because I think his contract isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on. That is just indefensibly stupid.

          • Reenavipul says:

As I’ve written before, trade him or expose him, I didn’t care. But by all means, please focus on the exposure.

I want his salary off the books before the NTC kicks in. Not that he isn’t worth it, but because I have better uses for that cap space in the long term. If Step goes off the books, the team has around $25mm for 2018-19, so I can either offer sheet McDavid or chase Tavares, both of whom are a sizable upgrade over Stepan. I then have $10mm to handle my RFAs.

They didn’t expose him, so we’re on to the next thing.

I can plug Hayes in tomorrow and get the same production(his P60(even taking over Step’s defensive role) role last season was on .07 less) for half(more like 40%) the price.

I plug Lindberg at 3C and Fogarty or a waiver pickup as 4C.

All this means is I have a similar team for less and still make the playoffs. If I get it wrong and they miss the playoffs, it’s not by much. So the team gets a decent 1st rd pick.

If I don’t deal Stepan, in 2018 I have $21mm in space and if I’m going after McJesus($15mm) I now have $6mm to re-sign Miller, Hayes & Skjei and replace/re-sign Grabner & Nash. In all likelihood, I’m now having to deal Miller or Hayes and letting Nash go, making the team worse depthwise even as the top is better.

Sorry you can’t think things all the way through.

              ______________

Coming from a guy who wants to expose a 1C rather than trade him.

I want you to take note of what he goes for (when he’s finally shipped out), and just remember you would have gladly let that return walk just so you could chase a pipe dream two years down the road.

As for EDM & McDavid…. I needed a good laugh. Thank you.

I didn’t think you’d be the type of person to suggest that there’s even a snowball’s chance in hell they part with him, no matter the cost. Guess I misjudged you.

              • Reenavipul says:

I guess you missed the part about McDavid being a RFA, Edmonton being a team that spends barely above the floor and whose revenues are largely funded by Cnadian dollars, which you need 76 American cents to buy one of.

A front loaded($20mm 1st 2 years) $15mm AAV would be close to (C$26mm)C$20AAV, which would be 36% of last year’s budget. Even if they could fill the rest of the roster with guys on NHL minimum, the roster would be close to $70mm(C$90.) Why do you think Edmonton has been trying to shop RNH and Eberle? They see this coming.

Can’t afford to lose him? They couldn’t afford to keep him.

All it takes is advance planning skills, creative thinking, draft picks and onions. The team has the picks.

              • ANGRY WIENER DOG STAMPEDE says:

… you really think, despite what you just said, that they wouldn’t sooner dismantle every square inch of Edmonton than willingly let that kid take a hike?

Even if it meant completely re-rebuilding the rebuild?

Seriously? As in, no joke, not messing around, 100% serious?

                lol

                Even Katz isn’t that stupid.

Lol…. that’s funny. You actually think they’d sooner not redo the rebuild of the rebuild than let the kid walk…. especially considering what PIT has managed to do by holding onto their irreplaceable talent.

To be perfectly frank, your entire argument is pretty ridiculous, for more than one reason. To even suggest that they would land another player of his caliber without tanking for another decade…. lol…

They’re not letting McDavid go. Katz would sooner move the team than the player.

But I must say, for the record…. this entire conversation has been quite humorous. For that, I thank you.

With all due respect, that is nuts.

If Grabner had any real value (north of what we’ll pay to lose someone), don’t you think they would have traded him? He’s a 15-20 something guy who shot a career high ~16%.

Solid player, should’ve been protected…. but not at the cost of a f***ing #1 center. And no, that’s not a f***ing opinion – it’s a f***ing fact. NHL dot com, go look at the top thirty centers last year in scoring (last few f***ing years, actually)……..

This is probably the most insanely idiotic thing people attempt to argue on here. Probably worse than the Lundqvist stupidity.

Giving away a number one center for free because you don’t like the guy – F***ing genius.

      • Rich S says:

        Dog ,
First of all this is an organization which LET Anton Strallman walk away after showing he was our best defenseman in the playoffs that year, yes better than McDonagh!
This is an organization that signed Girardi and Stall to long term , big money contracts when they were past their best years!
This is an organization that signed a 32? year old goalie to big money, long term contract.
This is an organization that traded Lee Stempniak at/near trade deadline and then had no replacement for him when an injury hit.

Stepan in 97 playoff games has ONLY 13 even strength goals , ONLY 3 game winning goals and -8……all while getting first line minutes!!!!!!!!!!
Stepan would help us more if he were playing against us!
Dog, DONT YOU WATCH HIM PLAY? He is slow, soft, has no shot, doesnt drive possession, cant carry the puck into zone, runs from contactdoesnt go into corners only stands in the slot and waits for zucc or kreider to pass the puck to him! And has COMPLETELY stopped playing defense and no longer cover his man…….ever since the concussion he has become useless!!!!

Yes, I’m well aware of their failure to properly evaluate defensemen & moreover, defensive synergies. Speaking of the latter, you forgot Yandle & Dmac, the latter of whom is just starting to recover from Bingoitis. The prognosis on Yandle is slightly worse, unfortunately; hopefully (I think?) he realizes we employ a fucknut & regains his confidence.

“This is an organization that signed Girardi and Stall to long term , big money contracts when they were past their best years!”
          _________________

Even worse when you consider that Girardi, while being someone I will always respect, had no business being kept in lieu of the rumored deal ANA had offered us at the trade deadline (1st rd pick & Vataanen). Resigning Staal was also insane, especially given the injuries he sustained. Neither of these guys were generational talents (despite being past all-stars). Good, a few excellent years here & there, but there were clearly in the rear view mirrors of these players careers. Speaking of generational talents….

“This is an organization that signed a 32? year old goalie to big money, long term contract.”

          ____________________

I disagree here; Lundqvist has been a generational talent throughout his whole career. He’s the type of player you keep. I don’t like beating dead horses, but if you’re curious, check out Travis Yost’s articles on #30 on TSN. You’ll see what I mean.

Also, for the sake of brevity, the Stemniak sh!t was insane. They have no idea what they’re doing. And by ‘they’, I mean Alien Bingo & anyone who thinks he knows how to evaluate players (better than any given bum off the street).

Lastly, to address your Stepan … assessment… let me give you a statisitc – 60% gf. The rangers score 60% of the total goals scored while Stepan is on the ice. See, it cuts both ways.

Not to say that I think they should keep him, or that I like his style of play. No, & I’ve said as much before.

But to say he has less value than Lindberg, or Fast, or Grabner in a trade? That is absolutely insane, and logically indefensible. It simply is not true. At all.

Agree with it or not, he’s considered a #1C by people other than you & I. And such things, especially cost controlled ones, renowned for their defensive play (+/- is a terrible stat to invoke) on the ‘right side’ on 30 command a certain price in a trade. Hell, even Eric Staal on an expiring contract cost what he did (and Hanzal, etc….).

Even if you, as an armchair GM, don’t like a player for whatever reason, to outright say that they’re worthless (ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU CAN/SHOULD JUST TRADE THEM TO SOMEONE ELSE WHO DISAGREES) is just …

nuts… as in, it literally makes no sense whatsoever

    • Bobby B says:

Rich S, at times I feel the inmates are running the Asylum when it comes to the Rangers. Nick Holden, huge reason why we did not beat Ottawa !! Derrick Stephan, most overrated , overpaid center in the league!!! ( Both of these players showed their true colors in the playoffs!! ) Yet they are protected???? Makes one wonder if Sather is still calling the shots??, Lord help us!!!

      • ANGRY WIENER DOG STAMPEDE says:

“Nick Holden, huge reason why we did not beat Ottawa ”

        __________________

They protected him for the sake of it. It was either 8 skaters or 7 forwards 3 defensemen. Although I would’ve rather seen them protect an actual doorstop than this ‘Hodor’….

        As for Stepan, see above.

      • Walt says:

        Bobby

I’m one of the his most critical guys on this site, but we really can’t expose Step because he has value, it’s simple as that !!!!!!

What value we’ll see soon enough, not what many may think, but it’s a return, and that’s all that counts……………….

        • JoeS. says:

Theeeeeere’s Walt! Sorry they made you say that Walt! LOL

        • Rich S says:

          Walt,
I cant watch stepan any more. Him NOT playing for us makes us immediately better. Addition by subtraction. I have been watching rangers since late 60’s and he is maybe the worst center I can remember!
Unless Milbery, Esposito or Sather were another teams GM, I find it hard to believe other GM’s would want him……and to repeat myself….Stepan in 97 playoff games has ONLY 13 even strength goals , ONLY 3 game winning goals and -8……all while getting first line minutes!!!!!!!!!!
Stepan would help us more if he were playing against us!

    • JoeS. says:

Come on Rich S you are clearly just trolling.. How do you protect Stepan??…that is patently ridiculous….

    • Jay says:

Yeah MVP. I guess you don’t realize Hank and McD are on the team. And you call someone else a bonehead.

  6. Duncan says:

It’s not a surprise based only on Rangers poor personnel management. Shouldn’t have wasted a spot on Holden and used that instead on Grabner, Lindbergh, or Fast.

    • Five Hole says:

Can’t – can only protect 7 forwards and 3 defensemen.

    • Mikeyyy says:

Good defenseman are harder to find than good forwards.

Plus remember they only get one pick.

    • sherrane says:

They couldn’t have done so because it was against the rules. The Rangers had the choice of protecting 8 skaters and a goaltender or 7 forwards, 3 defensemen, and a goaltender. Considering they had to protect Staal (NMC) and wanted to protect McDonagh, they had a choice to protect 6 forwards OR 7 forwards and one more defenseman.

Arizona, Florida, Los Angeles, Nashville, New Jersey, NY Islanders, and Pittsburgh were the teams who decided to protect only 8 skaters and all of the teams protected at least 4 defensemen with the Islanders protecting 5.

  7. Chuck A says:

    Buckle up this week!

  8. Five Hole says:

I knew Holden was going to be protected. Smith hasn’t been signed yet, if at all. Not sure why folks thought he’d be unprotected and he’s one of AV’s boys.

    • ANGRY WIENER DOG STAMPEDE says:

Maybe because of some faint hope of lulling Vegas into selecting him? I don’t know, I was hoping they’d leave him unprotected. It would really hurt to lose Lindberg or Grabner….

    • ANGRY WIENER DOG STAMPEDE says:

I was kind of hoping they’d leave him exposed. VGK selecting him (over say, Lindberg or Grabner) would be a lot better IMO.

  9. Spozo says:

Vegas needs to select 30 players. What happens to the extra 7 players that don’t make the 23 man roster? I guess they go to whatever Vegas’s AHL team? They aren’t released or sent back to the team they came From right?

    • ANGRY WIENER DOG STAMPEDE says:

“What happens to the extra 7 players that don’t make the 23 man roster?”

They’ll need to trade them or risk losing them to waivers in September.

    Happy Fathers Day guys.

  11. wwpd says:

My biggest question : what will Holland have to offer McPhee for the Golden Retrievers to keep their hands off of the Undertaker?

    • Spozo says:

Mcilrath is a UFA. He had a clause in his contract where he would become a free agent if he didn’t suit up for 41 games this season.

It’s kind of telling what teams think of him if both teams he was traded to knew that he wouldn’t be their property by seasons end.

  12. Peter says:

Arguing that they should not protect a still young center with trade value like Stepan is about as crazy as it comes. Come on people, think! 😀😀😀

Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers out there. My wife and daughter made it memorable, like they do every day I am blessed enough to wake up again.
