Atlantic Division Semis, Game 4: It can’t get worse than Game 3, right?

The Rangers embarrassed themselves on Sunday night, putting forth an abysmal effort in a 3-1 loss. After what seemed like a promising start to the series in Montreal, the Rangers have now turned a potential 2-0 series lead into a 2-1 deficit. A more focused effort on offense, getting chances, and actually sustaining a forecheck are a must for the Rangers tonight.

It’s fairly simple for the Blueshirts. They aren’t going to beat Carey Price with clean shots. They are going to need to actually try, actually get to the net, and actually control the puck in order to win. It can’t be the Henrik Lundqvist show every game. They need to support their All-World goaltender. He deserves better.

  1. Stevem says:

Time to put on the foil.

    • Fotiu is God says:

Stick tap to that, SteveM. If not the wry duality within.

Irregardless, be it sparking up a hit, or putting on the tin foil hat, count Fotiu in.

  2. Chris F says:

To a man, AV included, the Rangers have spoke of being ready to turn things around in game 4. They’re eager and motivated to show what they’re made of. They’ve acknowledged all the execution weaknesses we’ve dissected ad nauseum –turnovers, pucks on net, traffic, zone entries, PP, etc– so they know what needs to be fixed.

  3. joe cafardo says:

We will find out tonight if the coach and his team, has a pulse.

  4. paulronty says:

These are the best possible lines, but will the drive be there. I think it will so I look for the Rangers to bounce back tonight, but I’m still not overly convinced they can win the series. I expect it to go 6 or 7 games.

  5. Hatrick Swayze says:

An underlying story here is how Galchenyuk has quietly climbed out of 4th line purgatory onto a nice top 6 role on anew actual scoring line. Julien’s fixing of his own yard will prove to only make things more difficult for us along the way.

    • King Sieveqvist ! King Sieveqvist ! King Sieveqvist ! says:

There’s coaching … think he had a little tiff or something with him and demoted the kid to the 4th line right off the bat when he took over ! … Bottom line ,Habs are more aggressive and using the body way more , not the big bone crushing hits but the ones where they grind you down and make you move the puck quicker then you want.Well there have been a few big hits from each side but only a few …

  6. Leatherneck says:

Tanner Glass out….brilliant….just brilliant….mess with the best line….Fire AV, Kreider, Zibby were better choices to sit….We gonna lose the next two…kinda like 79

    • pavel_burito says:

The team had trouble scoring. And while yes, Glass played very hard, he’s not going to put the puck in the net. Buchnevich might.

I don’t think it’s the case of punishing Glass, but a desperate attempt to get something going. Our 4th line should not be our best, and also, the power play needed a boost.

  7. Chris F says:

Hmmm. Interesting point made by Jones just now. He said each and every Ranger should be ready to elevate their game tonight for Glass, a warrior who put it all out there and did nothing but earn a spot on the starting lineup, but now needs to sit because the players around him couldn’t get it done. Whatever it takes to motivate, but this is as good a reason as any.

    • Leatherneck says:

Terrible message to send in my view….to punish a guy for his effort and heart…..that to me says…it doesn’t matter how hard you play. I would’ve sat Kreider or zibby

      • Chris F says:

AV didn’t punish Glass for his effort and heart, he’s benching him in spite of his effort and heart.

Look, we need all offensive weapons available and Buchnevich has the potential to make an impact. This series is still well in hand, AV needs to ice the team that gives us the best chance to win. Glass has played his heart out, but this banging style isn’t working. Rangers had 50+ hits last game and it did nothing for them. Time to try a different approach.

      • Ray says:

Not to take a position here, but I don’t think this should be viewed as punishment. It may seem like semantics but AV is playing Buchnevich, not benching Glass. I think AV and his teammates will give Tanner a hearty thank you for his work so far. And I really believe that is the way Glass interprets it as well. I’m sure after a year in purgatory, he is just happy to be a true part of the team.

Benching is what happened to Holden in Game 3 and to Klein in Game 4.

      • Rich S says:

Amazing we sit one of the 5 guys who actually have played hard every shift![other being vesey, zucc smith and miller]…

What a message to send to the rest of the team who have played like pus%^$ys!!!

    • Fotiu is God says:

Sure. I mean, call me a sucker for the transrational or unexplainable, Chris.

But let’s reframe this: There’s one F with a GWG amongst our group of 15.

And you make an example of him… but not suiting him up.

As our politics have come to mirror one of Philip K. Dick’s parallel or alt realities, so has our Blueshirt Nation.

“Hey, can I get a side of psilocybin or mescaline with that hot dog? Yeah; mustard and catsup… Burn the onions, too, eh.”

      • Chris F says:

No one’s being made an example of though. You think AV is sitting Glass as punishment? You think Glass is sitting so as to wake up the rest of the team?

No, Glass is sitting because AV wants to prioritize skill tonight, so he’s icing the most skilled lines he can.

        • Fotiu is God says:

Indeed. I get the the rationale, Chris.

But who in that “prioritized skill” group has a GWG?

Our only forward with one sits, reduced to a bystander.

      • pavel_burito says:

Glass is AV’s favorite human being. He’s not being sat out as a punishment or an example. For AV to pull Glass out, when he’s actually playing well, shows that he’s actually trying something new

  8. King Sieveqvist ! King Sieveqvist ! King Sieveqvist ! says:

Good coaching …. go back to run and gun which = 0.0

  9. HOF 19 says:

I want to see Ranger players getting to the puck first…..ALL…..NIGHT…….LONG !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. Chris F says:

    Much better crowd tonight.

  11. Peter says:

The boys look like they came to play tonight. I don’t care if they lose so long as they give it their all.

  12. HOF 19 says:

A single solitary heartbeat 1-0 Rangers.

  13. Chris F says:

  14. paulronty says:

Man, D getting caught up ice way too much.

  15. Leatherneck says:

How about that linesman’s positioning on the Montreal goal…..geez man

  16. Leatherneck says:

And now we will fall apart

  17. Chris F says:

What is Holden doing there? My God.

  18. paulronty says:

There were 7 Canadians & 7 Rangers on ice for that tying goal.

    • pas44 says:

I just do not understand why that goal could not have been disallowed…

it was as obvious as an offsides, just silly if you have the proof…

      NHL = Durrrr

  19. paulronty says:

Rick Nash–fans complain about this guy who gives 100% every shift.

    • pas44 says:

He does give his all, but I think he was brought in to score more, and now his paycheck hurts the team not getting the production, but he is rocking this series…

I hope he keeps it up cuz he does always give 100% and is a really good team mate and guy…

      all the best Rick…

  20. Chris F says:

    Nash, Mr April!

  21. Stevem says:

    Shoot the damn puck Kreider!!!!

    • Fotiu is God says:

Dude, even the hyper polite TSN/Canadian announcers/analysts singled out Cream-puff Kreider as, “Completely lost.” “Indifferent.”

      Sit him.

  22. Chris F says:

Buchnevich is dangerous. Really like his game right now.

  23. Stevem says:

Is it wrong to want to see Gallagher ride shotgun with Dany Heatley?

    • Fotiu is God says:

      F**k, bro, you’re on fire.

Wait, is SteveM also the choral artist of that ill Pelle Lindbergh chant from years back?

Okay, time for a “Beat your wife, Potvin, beat your wife” call.

Man, I miss old time hockey.

  24. Chris F says:

See what happens when PLAYERS execute and connect simple passes?

  25. paulronty says:

Buch_Z-Kreider, a line that should have played together all season, but Flash couldn’t figure that out. Buch is comfortable & confident with those two.

    • Chris F says:

Just had to find a way to turn a smart coaching decision into a negative? You people are the saltiest bunch of nihilist I’ve ever come across. Holy fuck.

      • Chris F says:

Just had to find a way to turn a smart coaching decision into a negative? You people are the saltiest bunch of nihilist I’ve ever come across. Holy f@#$!

      • Fotiu is God says:

What the… How do you get to post expletives, Chris? Are you a member of The Cloth? A Mason?

Hell, I cite Original Rob’s well documented use of hallucinogens, Swarty’s lengthy criminal history, Coach Walt’s involvement in reverse-engineered/crashed UFOs back when he was Air Force-CIA, the Bobby B.-Gambino Family nexus… and I get ceaseless “Awaiting Moderation” notices.

        S++t ain’t right.

        Somebody run Price.

  26. Chris F says:

So is AV putting on a coaching clinic tonight?

Is Julien an idiot for shuffling his lines trying to find something that works?

  27. Chris F says:

Zuke is about 5 steps minimum ahead of the Montreal defender. Yeah, that’s an icing.

  28. Chris F says:

Lindberg quickly becoming a fan favorite.

  29. Spozo says:

And we have a 3 game series.

  30. Bloomer says:

Rangers came out hard from the start and set the tone for the match. Full marks for the blueshirts and their coach Av on the win.

  31. Chris F says:

That’s f@#$ing right, boys! The Rangers are back and we got ourselves a series! Hell of a game, an absolute 180 from Game 3.

Heroes of the game, Nash, Hank, and Smith. Smith is a f@#$ing warrior. So impressed with him. Zuke being Zuke. Vesey, Buchnevich, and Zibanejad were all very good. McDonagh took control much more. Fast and Lindberg. God, so many good performances tonight.

Still waiting on Kreider, Miller, and Stepan.

    Holden out, Clendening in please

    • Bloomer says:

When the teams have similar makeups its the team that wants it the most who come out the victors. Tonight the Rangers wanted it and played balls out. Now they what its will take to beat the Habs! Hockey is no place for old men…its blood and guts….warriors with clubs also sometimes referred to as hockey sticks..

  32. Leatherneck says:

Smith is a keeper for sure….Good win

    • Fotiu is God says:

      Yea, Leather.

Smith will play, no battle, with all of seven fingers. Stud.

AV, in all likelihood, will summarily bench him.

Then he’ll replace Smith with Per Djoos. Or the little-known, transgender third Sedin Twin, Hjalgar.

  33. Stevem says:

Best of 3 now.. let’s go into the Bi*ch Centre and take game 5

  34. HOF 19 says:

OK we won….I still need to see more……Like win the next game something like 5-2 ( or 6-2 ). That’s how high I am putting the bar !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  35. Chris F says:

Time to go read the meltdown over at Eyes on the Prize.

  36. HARLEMBLUES says:

The King,Nash,Zuccarello,Mika,Buch,McD,Smith,Fasth and Lindbergh played not in my house you don’t hockey tonight. Up until the tonight the Rangers have lose 5 playoff home games in a row. A lost tonight would have tied a NHL record. Others have to stop being passengers. Our best center in this series so far has been Oscar Lindbergh. Wake up 6 million dollar man.

  37. Chris F says:

Recon complete over at Eyes on tbe Prize. What I learned:

    1) Nash is a douchebag, and intentionally tried to injure Price.

    2) Smith is a whiner.

    3) Refs tried to screw the Habs.

    4) Habs played like hot garbage and still almost beat the Rags. Not scared.

So, in conclusion, about as rational as our discussions over here. The only difference is Habs fans are irrationally petulant, entitled, and self absorbed, while we seem to be irrationally masochistic.

  38. King Sieveqvist ! King Sieveqvist ! King Sieveqvist ! says:

Dr . ,Jekyll and Mr Hyde’s team ….. Why do they need to make it so hard for themselves ! Unreal , they could be sitting pretty right now , least the next game is away !

    • pas44 says:

why you ask, cuz Holden blew it and we are not up 3-1 because of his play.

did you see henrik bug out again at him!

he flopped like a dead fish on that goal..

      • King Sieveqvist ! King Sieveqvist ! King Sieveqvist ! says:

There was a lot more going on during that play then Holden ! Like where in the hell is our center .. Oh yeah Lolly Gagging his way back in the zone … He just cruised back … The guy should have been in 6 th gear WFO ( that’s wide f-ing open )

        • Leatherneck says:

Even more, the linesman allowed that play to happen, that puck should have been in deeper but it hit his skate that caused the puck to remain by the boards

        • Fotiu is God says:

You said it, King. But properly ID the perpetrator.

To fill in your gap, I’m pulling out a Foghat album from Original Rob’s rather voluminous record collection.

This dedication is to you, Derek Stepan, (whom King S. failed to name):

          “Slow drive… take it easy…”

  39. amy says:

they do not make it easy they play a bad game on sunday then AV skates them at the garden on Monday and then yesterday they play a good game now follow this up tomorrow night in Montreal so you guys can wrap it up Saturday to get ready for the next opponents

  40. Blueshirts94 says:

Brendan Smith died for our sins. Hope he’s healthy, what a warrior.

    • Fotiu is God says:

      Gospel, 94. Smith’s a stud.

Throwback. Essential. Leaves it all out there. Gorton’s best move, arguably.

Put another way, so not an AV player…
