The Rangers dominated the Flyers all night, but Steve Mason was up to the task, stopping 16 shots in the first period and 34 total for the shutout. Henrik Lundqvist was just as good, but wasn’t given much help in front of the net on both goals that eluded him, as the Flyers snapped the Rangers three game winning streak.

The story of the game will be the goaltending of Mason and the Rangers pretty poor powerplay. It wasn’t so much that the Rangers didn’t score on the powerplay, it was that they looked terrible on their chances. Add a great effort by Mason, and it was a recipe for disaster.

Worth noting: While the Rangers got a ton of shots on Mason early, they were with a clear line of sight. They didn’t generate many quality chances early on.

On to the goals:

Flyers 1, Rangers 0

The Rangers goofed a little on this penalty kill. You can see at the start that they had four guys on the strong side, which opened up the pass to Jakub Voracek all alone. He rifled a shot low and to the far side to create chaos in front. J.T. Miller and Dan Girardi went to Brayden Schenn, and Ryan McDonagh was late to getting to Wayne Simmonds in front, who buried the rebound.

Flyers 2, Rangers 0

The Rangers first allowed Voracek to just cut to the slot with the puck and generate a good shot. Keep in mind he skated through the entire team. Then the rebound pinballed off Michael Grabner and through Kevin Klein for the goal.

Note: I had a lot of internet problems yesterday. These two gifs took about 15 minutes to upload each, and hockeystats.ca wasn’t loading for me for the Corsi and Scoring Chance charts. Couldn’t get any game images either, hence the Hank gif. Sorry folks.

The Rangers generated a lot of shots throughout this game, but didn’t get many high quality chances. Meanwhile they didn’t allow a huge number of shots (24), but there were a bunch in close. Mason was great, but Hank was just as good in stopping those chances.

The Rangers now have five days off for the All Star Game, giving those tired bodies a much needed rest.
