The Rangers found a way to beat the Devils last night, despite never leading in the game. Down 1-0 heading into the third period, Chris Kreider gave the Rangers life with his goal to tie it. After allowing a goal to Miles Wood just minutes later, it was Derek Stepan who played hero, scoring the tying goal with a minute remaining. The Rangers would eventually win the game in the shootout.

This was a game of goalies, ad Henrik Lundqvist and Cory Schneider were on top of their games. The Rangers and Devils didn’t play a low scoring affair because of lack of action, it was because both goalies put on a show. Any average goalie on either team, and it’s a blowout, as the teams were skating up and down the ice, generating chances freely.

On to the goals:

Devils 1, Rangers 0

This was a little bad luck here, as P.A. Parenteau’s shot got under Hank, and while sprawling Lundqvist knocked it into the net. There were a ton of bodies in front.

Rangers 1, Devils 1

Oscar Lindberg started this with a great cycle, and threw the puck on the net. Brady Skjei pinched in low to keep the play alive, getting it to Mats Zuccarello behind the net. That play drew Vernon Fiddler to Zucc, leaving Chris Kreider wide open at the goal mouth. Great pass by Zucc, and Kreider had the easy tap-in.

Devils 2, Rangers 1

Dan Girardi turned the puck over to Adam Henrique behind the net. Ryan McDonagh was slow to Miles Wood in front. Not a good look.

Rangers 2, Devils 2

This started with a Derek Stepan face off win. Zucc picked up the puck, got it up to Kevin Klein, who got it across to McDonagh. Stepan found the seam in the slot, and McDonagh hit him with a hard pass. Stepan simply had to chip the pass over Schneider’s shoulder to tie the game.

Even Strength Corsi

The Rangers were asleep at the wheel in the first period. They just let the Devils run all over them. They woke up and started generating their own offense in the second, but still allowed the Devils to get a bunch of chances in their own right. It wasn’t until the third, with the Devils likely shelling with a lead, that the Rangers were able to really tilt the ice in their favor.

Even Strength Scoring Chances

The Rangers had one scoring chance in the first period, and it wasn’t until the last minute of the period. Then it wasn’t until halfway through the second that they doubled it to two scoring chances. After that though, the floodgates opened as the teams traded chances. Not the best effort or process

With this win, the Rangers have yet another win where they did not score three goals. The team also showed some big time cajones, coming back from a goal down twice in the third period. It wasn’t the best game, but that’s expected from a team that played in Nashville the night before and in Dallas two nights before that. This is a team that has had eight games in 13 days (!). Any point is a good point right now.
