Rumor: Rangers to be a finalist for Jimmy Vesey

Per the Boston Herald, the Rangers will likely be one of the finalists for soon-to-be free agent Jimmy Vesey. The former third round pick by the Predators is the most highly sought after NCAA free agent since Justin Schultz, and has made it clear he will be going to free agency. Vesey put up 24-22-46 in his senior year at Harvard, which was actually down from his 32-26-58 line his junior year.

Vesey would likely jump to the NHL right away on a team’s top-nine forwards at a bare minimum of cost. Vesey can only sign for a max $925,000 base salary with roughly $3.5 million in max bonuses. Since the Rangers don’t have many players that qualify for bonuses, it’s likely that all of Vesey’s bonuses would hit the bonus cushion with no impact on next year’s cap. This is unlike the situation in Chicago, where bonuses are becoming a problem as they spill over into future seasons.

For the Rangers, landing him would mean tremendous flexibility to deal a forward to address some of the blue line issues. I’m of the belief that most of the league is waiting for Vesey to make a decision before more moves are made. If the Rangers can land him, it may open up that long rumored Rick Nash trade for a defenseman. Vesey becomes a free agent on Monday.

Keeping my fingers and toes crossed on this one!

  2. Andy says:

here’s hoping we can land him…and sort the rest out later

  3. amy says:

he would fit well on this team he would make whom ever he plays with that much better

  4. pas44 says:

    I am aroused!

This would make the Summer of Gordon officially one to remember.

Perhaps so hot it will melt the winter that is too come!

  5. Johnny Red says:

I would LOVE to sign him, but once again in these times people project players to be great when they haven’t even played in the pros yet. I’m not saying he isn’t a good hockey player but lets see him do it before we anoint him a pro hockey player.

We are one team who needs this signing because of our lack of 1st round picks. (thank you Mr. Sather) Lets hope he sees how great the Ranger organization treats their player and signs with us.

    • Ranger 11 says:

I was about to say the same thing. We’re already hearing how he’s gonna make whoever plays otheline with him better n we haven’t even seen what he can do in the NHL let alone who he’s gonna make better. I just would like to get him cause he sounds like he’s got the skills to make it n we wouldn’t be spending much money at all.

      • Chris A says:

That’s just it, anytime you can bring an asset like this into the organization at a minimal cost, you have to do it.

Even if Vesey is a bust, it only costs the Rangers a hair under $2M (though it’s likely even less than that, assuming that if is a bust he won’t spend two full years in the NHL).

        • Walt says:

even if he becomes another Justin Schultz!!!!!!

everyone wanted him, he went north to the Oilers, only to be moved elsewhere……………….but your right, he only costs money, rather than picks, or players !!!!!!!!!!

    • joe K says:

Sure blame Sather. He helped get us into the finals a few yrs ago. You think
we would have been there with more first round draft picks.?? How about asking Edminton how that worked out for them. We won the cup in 1994 not with number one draft picks, but by sacrificing the future to win NOW.

  6. Fotiu is God says:

I give you, Blue Seat BlogMaster Dave,
    performing Sinatra’s “Girl from Ipanema”
    (Jimmy Vesey as ‘The Girl’)

Tall and not tan and young and whitey-politey
The boy from Ipanema goes walking
And when he passes, each one he passes
    Goes “A-a-a-h”

When he skates he’s like a samba
When he walks, he’s like a samba
That swings so cool and sways so gentle
That then he passes, each one he passes
    Goes “A-a-a-h”

Oh, but I watch him so sadly
How can I tell him I love him
Yes, I would give my heart gladly
But each day as he walks to the sea
He looks straight ahead, not at me
Tall and not-tan and young and Harvard whitey
The boy from Ipanema goes walking
And when he passes, I smile, but he
Doesn’t see. He just doesn’t see
    No, Vesey just doesn’t see…

    • paulronty says:

LOL!!! Sinatra compadre? You mean Antonio Carlos Jobim,si?

      • Fotiu is God says:

Well, if you’re gonna split hairs, Doctor: you need to add Astrud Gilberto to Jobim and Frank.

Hell, I also caught Swarty doing his rendition at karaoke night in Iqaluit, Nunavut. Believe that was ’73, the night Reggie Leach closed the bar, then scored seven goals.

        • paulronty says:

You know Professor, I always thought Astrud sang that song like she needed an enema. You know rich bitch on the beach.

    • JoeS. says:

      Nice Job!

  7. Bloomer says:

I haven’t had a chance to watch Jimmy V play, but the scouting report is he has size, good hands and doesn’t shy away from grinding it out in the corners. He would be a good addition to the Rangers, but it might be a challenge for AV to work him in the lineup over his play around the perimeter only golden boys.

  8. agentsmith says:

I’m skeptical of ncaa players especially 3Rd rd picks. But the organization needs assets. But let’s not call him Rick Nash just yet.

  9. Jake W says:

Trade Nash to NASHvie for Ryan Ellis

  10. Chris72 says:

The Lundqvist window is slowly closing and we are getting younger, which is a good thing longterm for a franchise but maybe not so much for Hank. Am I the only one who thinks we should trade Hank and officially start looking toward the future? His value will never be as high as it is right now and he could bring in a haul if he was dealt to a contender who is just an elite net minder away from serious contention for the cup. Maybe someone like……. Dallas. Klingberg would look fantastic alongside Skjei or Day in the future…… just saying.

    • Tom Hanssen says:

Problem is, Lundqvist doesn’t want to leave NY and has NTC and MNC.
He would have to want to leave….but what team would take him? He’s overpaid, no team wants 14% cap taken by the goalie . If he had a cup or two, then I’d hes worth the $ but he’s being paid cup money with no cup.

      Cart before the horse.
