Henrik Lundqvist did his best to steal this game for the Rangers, but couldn’t do it all as Darren Helm’s leg won the game in overtime for the Red Wings. Lundqvist made 40 saves on 43 shots as the Rangers were completely dominated from the get-go. The Rangers managed 28 total shot attempts the entire game. Twenty-eight. There is nothing good about this game, other than Lundqvist.

But yet, the Rangers still found themselves in it because of some good bounces. But as good as those bounces were, the bad bounces always counter it. Ryan McDoangh hit the post on an empty net. Most of the Wings goals came off bounces. But this is what happens when bad process meets normal luck. Bad process means losses. This is what you should expect when the Rangers don’t show up.

As always, you can view the full videos on our video page here. All GIFs are on nyrgifs.comfiltered under the date of the game. On to the goals:

Rangers 1, Wings 0

Derek Stepan stole the puck from Danny Dekeyser after Chris Kreider’s pass was behind him. This eventually led to a scrum in front, where the puck popped loose to Stepan who put it into the empty net.

This was a lot of fail by the Rangers. First, Mats Zuccarello made a fairly lazy zone clear to center ice, a clear turnover. Then as the Wings entered the zone, Dan Boyle lost sight of the puck at his feet, and Keith Yandle, assuming Boyle would wrap the puck around the boards, went to the opposite corner. Meanwhile Darren Helm cut between Boyle and Hayes, and Luke Glendening was able to get the puck through to him off Hayes’ stick. Helm roofed it over Hank.

Rangers 2, Wings 1

Kreider gave the Rangers the lead on the powerplay with a solid deflection off a Yandle shot from the point. The powerplay was solid, with good movement and a solid play by Stepan to keep the zone. Eventually Detroit’s PKers got tired. Great powerplay.

Eric Staal took a penalty with two minutes left, The Wings pulled the goalie, and then it was a 6-on-4. Brad Richards buried the rebound after Henrik Zetterberg’s shot went off Justin Abdelkader’s leg.

The Wings get their much-needed victory, as Pavel Datsyuk’s shot hit off Helm in front for the goal. Sorry about the quality on this, blame NHL.tv.

Shot Attempts

shots

Wow this is bad. They just didn’t play in the first period, yet had a lead? At least the second period was better.

Scoring Chances

scf

Well the second period was better from both a quantity and quality standpoint. But one scoring chance in the first, and none in the final eight minutes? Come on.

Standard Alain Vigneault rotation. Look at Oscar Lindberg’s ice time. Is it any more obvious he will be scratched when the team is healthy?

Positivity time: The Rangers got a point. So there’s that. But this is a bad habit of bad process and relying way too much on Henrik Lundqvist. This needs to stop.
