The Rangers got their revenge on Wayne Simmonds, with Dylan McIlrath dropping the gloves with the guy who sucker punched Ryan McDonagh last week in the first minute of the game. Tanner Glass dropped the gloves with Ryan White shortly thereafter, and then Derick Brassard gave the Rangers a lead before the fighting majors expired. After that, the game slowed to a normal, grind-it-out divisional matchup that this series has been all year.

The game was uneventful, with both goalies making their share of saves, until the third period when Derek Stepan scored twice to seal the game for the Rangers. Both goals were assisted on beautiful passes from Mats Zuccarello. Henrik Lundqvist did the rest, even if he lost the shutout in the final ten seconds after an extended 6-on-3-and-a-half (Daniel Paille broke his stick for most of it).

This was a solid rebound win after only getting a point against the Kings the other night. Special teams were pretty solid as well, another good sign for this team.

As always, you can view the full videos on our video page here. All GIFs are on nyrgifs.comfiltered under the date of the game. On to the goals:

Rangers 1, Flyers 0

Keith Yandle led Derick Brassard into the zone, who then blew by Mark Streit. Brass beat Steve Mason to the far post, tucking the puck between his skate and the post for the goal.

Rangers 2, Flyers 0

Dan Girardi kept the puck in at the blue line, and put the puck towards the net. The initial shot was blocked, and Mats Zuccarello was able to get the loose puck on his backhand while Derek Stepan drifted to the back door. Both Flyers’ defensemen went to Zucc, who made the best backhand pass I’ve ever seen. Stepan had the empty net.

Rangers 3, Flyers 0

This was a beautiful powerplay goal. Brassard held the puck at the half boards, got it to Zuccarello behind the net, who got it to Stepan at the back door again. Stepan roofed it.

Brayden Schenn ruined the shutout as he charged to the net after Jakub Voracek’s shot and tucked the rebound home. The Rangers were gassed on this. This entire foursome was on the ice for the full penalty late. Paille played most of it without a stick as well.

This chart has score effects all over it, especially in the final five minutes after the Rangers made it 3-0. But for the most part, the Rangers controlled play at even strength. They flatlined a bit at the end of the second though killing two penalties. That sharp uptick for the Flyers at the end of the second penalty in the period was when the penalty killers got stuck on the ice for an extended period.

Scoring Chances

scf

Much like the first chart, the Rangers held the Flyers in check for the most part in regards to quality chances. Score effects got them in the third, but that’s expected.

Individual Corsi

Marc Staal’s struggles continue. Yikes. Also, Keith Yandle had another solid game. I really hope they find a way to keep him.

Shot Locations

Lots of attempts for the Rangers down low. The Flyers got a good number in the slot, but had much more from up top.

Girardi and Yandle stayed paired together for the entire game, something I didn’t expect to see. Staal and Kevin Klein got the tough assignment of the Claude Giroux line. Speaking of that line, look at that ice time at the end of the game. Wow.

The Rangers rebounded nicely after a tough loss to the Kings on Friday night. They’ve been very resilient while dealing with injuries to Rick Nash and Ryan McDonagh. If/when those two come back, the Rangers should see a boost to their special teams play as well. This is a good run, but more importantly there is good process to go with it.
