The Rangers lost their third game in a row against the Philadelphia Flyers in Saturday afternoon shutout at home. The loss was also notable for the presence of Dylan McIlrath and Emerson Etem in the lineup, as well as some juggled forward lines following Derek Stepan’s injury sustained against Boston on Friday. Despite playing a better game than their usual this season in terms of possession, a breakaway goal by Wayne Simmonds in the second put the Flyers up, followed by a scrappy goal in front by Sean Couturier early in the third and a late empty netter. Although the Rangers had a solid start to the game and got a decent amount of shot attempts throughout, a shutout loss at home against Philadelphia definitely stings.

Flyers 1 Rangers 0

Matt Read carries the puck through the neutral zone as Wayne Simmonds is breaking down the wing, beating the defender as he enters the zone. Simmonds then collects the pass from Read, puts a quick move on Raanta, and scores the goal.

Flyers 2 Rangers 0

After a backhander from Simmonds, Couturier finds himself in good position in front of the net. Whacking at it repeatedly, it eventually goes in.

Flyers 3 Rangers 0

Not a lot to see here. The Rangers pulled Raanta late in the third to try and even the score, Wayne Simmonds hits the net on a clearance to cap off the Flyers victory.

Possession Chart
chart
The Rangers had a pretty good start to the game but as you can see here let up some of the momentum later in the game, with the Flyers’ two goals coinciding with a flattening of the Rangers shot attempts.
Scoring Chances
chart (1)
Here again you can see that while the Rangers had a decent start to the game, Philadelphia picked up the pace about midway through the game and actually gained the lead in scoring chances by the end of the game.
Shot Location
chart (2)
Here you can see that while the Rangers had a decent amount of chances between the dots, the Flyers had a small cluster of shots directly in front of the net, including their first two goals.
All in all it wasn’t a terrible game from the Rangers, but a lack of high quality scoring chances ended up meaning a tough home shutout loss to a bitter rival. Hopefully the Rangers can improve as the face Carolina on Monday.
