The New York Rangers made it eight wins in a row, beating the Ottawa Senators in a shootout. The game itself was rather uneventful, excluding overtime. The Rangers put 34 shots on Craig Anderson, including a decent amount from the slot area. Henrik Lundqvist made some pretty spectacular saves, which is becoming par for the course. But this game just didn’t have that level of excitement that others had.

Overtime, on the other hand, was crazy. Chances galore for both teams. I actually gave up trying to gif everything because there was so much I couldn’t keep up. That was by far the best overtime I’ve ever seen.

Before the goals, I wanted to touch on the Zack Smith headshot and ensuing fight with Chris Kreider (gifs here). That’s a clear headshot that the refs missed. Fine, it happens. But giving Kreider 17 minutes and Smith only 7 minutes is laughable.

As always, you can view the full videos on our video page here. All GIFs are on nyrgifs.comfiltered under the date of the game. On to the goals:

Rangers 1, Sens 0

This was a textbook powerplay goal for the Rangers. They had solid puck movement and good traffic in front. Keith Yandle gets the puck in the high slot and moves left, drawing Curtis Lazar to him, while Kevin Hayes rotates to the high slot. Yandle puts the puck on Hayes’ tape for a one-timer that Chris Kreider deflects in front.

Sens 1, Rangers 1

This was some pretty passing on the powerplay. This 5-on-2 rush started when Ryan McDonagh blew a tire in the offensive zone on a rush. It happens.

Score Adjusted Corsi

Since OT is 3 on 3, this chart flatlines after regulation. Both teams were pretty even throughout in terms of shot attempts. Not much else here.

Scoring Chances

scf

Scoring chances were tilted for the Sens, which makes sense when we take a step back and realize all the incredible saves Hank had to make again. Still relatively low event count, so not much in terms of action.

Individual Corsi

Marc Staal had a bit of an interesting game. He was out there for a lot of shot attempts, both for and against. The balance leaned in the red, but rather interesting to see.

Shift Chart

shift

The shift chart is a little off in this for a few reasons. First is that Alain Vigneault switched up the defense pairings in the second period. Dan Girardi/Ryan McDonagh still got the Kyle Turris line, but the bottom-four were jumbled a bit. Second, the forward lines were messed up after Kreider stuck up for Stepan.

Shot Locations

The Rangers did a good job limiting the Sense to the outside. You’d like to see those blue S’s down low to be reduced, but there wasn’t much in the high slot, and the rest of the chances were on the borders of the high risk areas.

The Maple Leafs are in town tomorrow night as the Rangers complete the second of back-to-backs and another three-in-four. With eight wins in a row and a 10-0-2 record in the last 12 games, the Rangers couldn’t be any hotter right now.
