Rochester Americans 3, Hartford Wolf Pack 2

By Phil Oxnard

Hartford, CT, November 1, 2015 – Defensemen Petr Zamorsky and Calle Andersson both scored their first North American pro goals for the Hartford Wolf Pack Sunday at the XL Center, but Cal O’Reilly had a goal and an assist for the Rochester Americans, and former Wolf Pack Bobby Sanguinetti’s second-period goal was the game-winner, in a 3-2 Rochester victory.

Jeff Malcolm made only his second appearance of the season in goal for the Wolf Pack and made 22 saves. Nathan Lieuwen was the winner in the Amerk goal, also with 22 stops.

Despite the loss, Malcolm expressed his excitement about getting to work with his team, “Our younger group is great,” the former Yale Eli said. “They work hard, they’re very energetic, they bring a lot to the locker room. I’m really excited for them.”

The action started quickly with Rochester’s Cal O’Reilly scoring on the game’s first shot at 2:13 of the first period, off a pass from Jason Akeson.

The Wolf Pack was given a power play at 5:03 of the first period when O’Reilly was sent to the box for interference. Zamorsky took advantage of the power play and scored at 5:59 to tie the game.

At 12:47, Rochester had its opportunity for a power play after Hartford’s Chris McCarthy was called for hooking. Hartford’s defense, however, was able to keep Rochester at bay.

The Americans’ Justin Bailey scored 15:22 into the first period, netting his second goal of the season and putting the Americans back into the lead. The remainder of the first period was scoreless, leaving the Americans up 2 – 1.

The Americans were the first to find a goal in the second period, as a shot from the right circle by Sanguinetti at 6:15 gave Rochester a two-goal advantage over Hartford.

Action between the two teams came to a head with a series of penalties starting with Hartford’s Zamorsky at 13:41 for interference, followed by Rochester’s Akeson for tripping at 14:12, and finally Hartford’s Marek Hrivik at 14:49 for tripping. Despite the man advantages, the Americans couldn’t find a goal.

About goalie Malcolm, Wolf Pack coach Ken Gernander said, “He’s in a tough role, but he handles himself well and he prepares hard, he gives us the opportunity for success on game night.”

Hartford found their second goal of the night at 17:47, when Andersson scored a power-play goal following Evan Rodrigues being penalized at 16:52 for interference. At the end of the second period, Rochester was up 3 – 2.

The third period started with a Rochester power play after Hartford’s Mat Bodie was called for high-sticking at 4:14. Hartford’s Jayson Megna almost earned the team a shorthanded goal when he was given a penalty shot at 4:29, but Lieuwen managed to make the save.

The Americans had their first successful penalty kill of the game following William Carrier being called for boarding at 6:49. Their defense stayed strong in the next power play as well, after Jerome Leduc was brought off the ice at 10:26 for slashing.

Despite a valiant effort from the Wolf Pack’s offense, they couldn’t put the puck in the net for the remainder of the game, leaving the final score at 3–2.

Gernander had praise for the team’s effort throughout a three-game weekend that yielded one win and two losses.

“Our guys battled hard pretty much all weekend despite just the two points,” he said.
