Baby Rangers drop first two games in Traverse City

September 13, 2015, by

The Baby Rangers in Traverse City are off to a rough start, dropping their first two games in the tournament to the Minnesota Wild (5-2) and St. Louis Blues (2-0). In the St. Louis game, both Ryan Gropp and Brad Morrison looked promising, per Corey Pronman. Brady Skjei is the captain of the team.

It’s worth noting that success in the tournament has no real bearing on anything in the future, but it’s nice to see that two 2015 picks are looking good. This team has a lot of non-roster invites on it, so success was a pretty big long shot this year.

Morrison looks good in spots, he really picked his game up over the last 1/3 of the season and in the playoffs with PG.

Gropp has to be willing to go hard to the net, stop playing a perimeter game. Everybody is looking to cycle the puck without engaging. I know it’s part and parcel with the lack of practice time, but this is the 1st hurdle where talent no longer is enough for most of these guys.

Tomorrow will be interesting as Columbus is stacked, beating Minnesota 8-5 in a wide open game. If the Baby Blueshirts can keep them under 6 I’ll be impressed. I think the D corp is the strongest part of this roster, big problem is guys not back checking hard enough or blocking out shots from the point.

I thought Halverson was on this team

Ryan Graves leading the team in SOG

Hoping to hear more from Tambellini

I think they know what they have in Halverson, will likely start the next 2 games. The offense revolves around shots from the point, that’s how disorganized it is.

    • Eddie!Eddie!Eddie! says:

I read somewhere that Halverson is day to day with a sprained ankle.

      • Alec says:

Not playing today, either. Smith spent about 2 minutes in the 1st playing without a stick as his was broken(even though goalies can play with broken sticks.)

What do you expect after trading away so many first and second round draft picks!

    Monday update:
Halverson not dressed, Skjei hasn’t played since 5 minutes remaining in the 1st, not on bench for 2nd. Didn’t see any apparent injury during play.

    • Alec says:

Rangers win 4-0 despite being outshot 38-26. Graves took most of Skjei’s minutes. Ottenbreit looks like he can play in HFD, so does Hart.

      • Alec says:

Turns out that Ottenbreit is still draft eligible, just needs a little more work on his skating.

Ryan Haggerty looks great, the kind of player you want to point out to kids there their 1st time on how to play the game.

The other thing is that Dylan Larkin just flies on the ice. If he’s not NHL ready, I don’t know who is.
