Rangers send Carl Hagelin to Anaheim for Emerson Etem

June 27, 2015, by

The New York Rangers have traded Carl Hagelin to the Anaheim Ducks for winger Emerson Etem. The Rangers will also get the 41st pick in the 2015 draft. The Ducks will get 59th and 179th picks. The Rangers selected Ryan Gropp with the 41st pick.

Hagelin, a 2007 6th round pick for the Rangers, put up 58-72-130 over four seasons with the Rangers. Hagelin was due a huge raise, and a lot of this trade has to do with saving cap space. Hagelin is a solid middle-six player and penalty killer, but is far from irreplaceable on the roster.

As for Etem, he was a 2010 1st round pick for Anaheim, and has a line of 15-16-31 in parts of three seasons with the Ducks. Etem is fast, big (6’1″, 206 lbs), and skilled, but hasn’t put it all together yet. Etem is an RFA as well, but he is coming off his ELC, and is due a bridge deal, likely in the $1.5-$2 million range.

It’s worth noting that Etem hasn’t really been used properly in Anaheim yet. He was playing on the fourth line, but with his skill set he should be top-nine. I think he will be fine if used properly (OZ starts).

Don’t know much about Etam other than he was a first rounder a few years back. Tough to see Hags go. Is this a cap space clearing move for something bigger?

Cap space move it looks like.

I read the “Draft Watch” article about him, said he’s a pure goal scorer. Looks like that hasn’t translated too well for him in the NHL. Yet, he was playing on the fourth-line.

        • Dave says:

Anaheim didn’t use him properly. I wonder how he can do on a sheltered line with Hayes.

I’m done…..done, done, done….Gonna go kick rocks and think about offing myself after this…..This just totally ruined my weekend….Im done.

    • Dave says:

      There’s more coming.

      • Chris A says:

Man, I hope there’s more coming. Etem is more of a fourth line guy on the Rangers and it’s not like the Rangers really moved up in the draft with this deal.

It feels like they got next to nothing for Hags.

        • Dave says:

Talbot trade. NYR traded down from 57. Rangers just want a bunch of picks. Looks like they really liked Gropp.

    Woooooowwwwww

Not that surprised Hags was moved. You knew his days were numbered when he didn’t get increased responsibilities when AV took over. AV wants guys who can make plays. Hags isn’t that guy, and as Dave point out, he’s due for a big raise.

I am surprised about the return though. Figured we could have gotten more for him.

    • Dave says:

I think Etem was misused in Anaheim. I’m intrigued to see how he does in sheltered starts.

    Something BIG is coming

  6. Chris F says:

Etem is a bum, statistically speaking. Other than that, I don’t know him, can’t recall ever really seeing him play or hearing anything about him.

That doesn’t bode well at all, when the cost is Hagelin.

Is this going to be one of THOSE offseasons?

    • Dave says:

Played on the 4th line in Anaheim, didn’t use his skills properly. We shall see how AV uses him.

      • Chris A says:

I hope you’re right Dave. It’s odd though, it’s not as if ANA had tons of talent up front that they were forced into putting a real good player on the fourth line.

Maybe Etem needs to get away from his hometown team and get a fresh start?

I’m assuming Hags priced himself out of NY and Sather took what he could get. That’s the only explanation thus far.

    • Hatrick Swayze says:

This is all about the cap crunch

      • Walt says:

This cap bull shit is killing the game, just what Buttman wanted, parity, and it stinks to high heaven. The best of luck to you Hags, this is one fan who is really pissed off with this deal !!!!!!

        • Dave says:

Don’t really think it’s killing the game. What killed the Rangers is poor asset management. Gave way too much money to Girardi and Glass. Gave a bit too much for Staal. Paying $3m for a 6D.

  8. FL-Swarty says:

Do not see the wisdom of trading Hags – he is going to be missed – Talbot for kind of low draft picks – don’t see that either….

    • Dave says:

This is a loaded draft. Get as many picks as possible. I’m ok with that philosophy.

Not ok with Gropp or Zboroskiy though. Don’t like those picks when better talent is available.

  9. Chris.C says:

Wow, just woke up and Boooom!!!!
The Hags trade is ridiculous. Gonna miss the speedy winger, hopefully Etem has some speed? Stats don’t show it all. Anyone see this kid play?

    • Dave says:

He’s fast and skilled. Misused in Anaheim as a 4th liner. Hasn’t put it all together yet.

  10. Bloomer says:

Going to miss stinky, he has great wheels and always puts out his best effort. Etem has speed and size and has power forward potential. Should he get an opportunity with Stephan or Brassard his numbers will improve. The Rangers also receive a decent draft pick and some badly needed cap relief. Its early, but the Sather did well here.

  11. Rockdog says:

I wonder if part of this move is to try to get bigger as well. I have felt at times over the past few years that the Rangers can get pushed around a bit, getting a young, fast and big winger should help. Losing Hags sucks, but gotta give to get.
