The New York Rangers are your 2014-2015 President’s Trophy winners. The game against the New Jersey Devils wasn’t pretty, especially in the second when Jordin Tootoo decided he wanted to be in the WWE, but the Ranger persevered, ignored the shenanigans, and came away with the two points. This was pure domination for the Rangers in the first two periods before the Devils decided to actually play hockey in the third period.

Cam Talbot was fantastic again, making 19 saves, many of them difficult. Cory Schneider was the lone positive for the Devils in this game, making 37 saves and keeping this game from being a complete blowout early on. While Tootoo and Eric Gelinas were busy cross checking everyone and their mothers, Schneider was making great save after great save.

But let’s not dwell. Let’s enjoy.

On to the goals:

Rangers 1, Devils 0

Kevin Hayes lost the faceoff clean, but the pressure from J.T. Miller and Martin St. Louis forced Eric Gelinas into a turnover behind the net. The puck popped to the front of the net, where Hayes gave the Rangers the lead.

Rangers 2, Devils 0

Derick Brassard won the faceoff on the powerplay, giving Hayes control of the puck along the boards. Hayes got the puck cross ice to Keith Yandle, who moved the puck to the point to Ryan McDonagh, who wristed one through a screen and past Cory Schneider.

Devils 1, Rangers 2

Good passing by the Devils on the powerplay moved the Rangers all over the place on the kill. Patrik Elias was left wide open in front as the Rangers had trouble adjusting to the quick passing. Scott Gomez got the puck from the boards to Steve Bernier down low, who one-touched it to Elias for the one-timer goal. You can make an argument that Dan Boyle should have gotten to Elias faster on this one.

Rangers 3, Devils 1

The fourth line came through on this one with a great shift and forecheck. Dominic Moore just threw the puck on net from a bad angle after Marc Staal kept the zone, and James Sheppard cut in front of the shot and tipped it past Schneider for the big two goal lead.

Devils 2, Rangers 3

Bernier got Talbot out of position after Travis Zajac made a nice pass to find him in the slot. Bernier threw the puck from behind into the crease, and it went off the combination of Talbot and Brassard.

Rangers 4, Devils 2

Carl Hagelin empty netter.

A joke through two, and a game in the third.

Scoring Chances:

It’s very clear when the Devils stopped caring early on. The third period was fun, but the rest of the game was ugly.

I’ve never really put much stock in the individual game-by-game charts honestly. Just here as an FYI.

The Devils’ shot attempt chart had half of these shot attempts before the third period.
