Dreger: Canes ask permission to speak with Ulf Samuelsson

June 17, 2014, by

Per Darren Dreger, the Carolina Hurricanes have asked permission of the Rangers to speak with assistant coach Ulf Samuelsson about their head coaching vacancy. Samuelsson has long been rumored to be on the list of candidates for multiple open positions, but teams were waiting for the Stanley Cup Final to end before speaking with him. It is likely Ulfie will land himself a head coaching job sooner rather than later.

If you were AV, would you feel comfortable having the “Messiah” standing next to you on the bench? Especially if the team goes south? I think they’ll opt for a lesser profile as an asst. Maybe Beukeboom?

I think an ex defenseman would fit Ulfie spot as coach of the PK and the defenseman. However, if AV is the coach and Messier took the associates job. Why should there be a conflict. Messier has to understand its AV’s team. I think Mess would be the perfect assistant coach but is he gonna run the PK and Defense like Ulfie did? How does all that responsibility get redispersed? If Messier wants to be an NHL coach. Sitting behind the NYR bench is the best place for him to start. I don’t think the NYR PK will be very good either way next year. Boyle likely gone. Ulf taking head coaching job somewhere. Moore is a UFA they had better make a priority. Unlike Boyle, Moore is fine with 4th line duty. I hope no one hires Ulf. He did a wonderful job this year with PK. 3rd in NHL in playoffs and regular season. 85.4% & 85.3% respectively. Messier would be a great bridge from the players to the coach and make the PP one of the best in the NHL. Arniel did a decent job until around the Olympic break. The PP was ranked as high as 6th at one point but 12.6% isn’t winning too many games in the playoffs. Fix the PP and that starts with a Center that can win a face off. Stepan has to get better. 42% is not getting it done. 47.4% as a team is 6% less than the top team. Boston.

Messier doesn’t have to understand anything. Hes not taking a backseat to the guy who beat him out for the head coaching job. It ain’t gonna happen!
