Rangers sign Mat Bodie out of Union College

April 16, 2014, by

Apologies for the delay on this one. Yesterday was one of those rare days where all of us got dumped on at work, and none of us could post on this.

The Rangers signed undrafted free agent defenseman Mat Bodie out of Union College yesterday, just days after leading his team to a National Championship. As a senior at Union, Bodie put up a line of 8-31-39 in 40 games. In his college career, Bodie put together a line of 28-96-124 in 154 games, impressive numbers for a kid who entered college at 6’0 and 165 lbs.

His size is why he went undrafted, but Julie Robenhymer notes that he is at least 15 pounds heavier since he entered college. Chris Peters, one of the best US hockey bloggers out there, compared him to Torey Krug of the Bruins.

Bodie’s signing adds a true offensive defenseman to the prospect pool for the Rangers. With Bodie, Conor Allen, Brady Skjei, and Dylan McIlrath in the system, the Rangers have done quite the job of restocking their defensive prospects after seeing so many graduate to the NHL.

He can’t help out in the playoffs but he has a lot of skill and could certainly see some time with the Rangers next season. If McIlrath doesn’t make the Rangers out of camp I could see those 2 paired together for most of the season just to even out the size and protect Bodie a little bit.

Good sign considering we lost a few draft picks…the next couple of years these kind of signings are imperative. He will fill out I am sure and fit in nicely with the Rangers

  3. Walt says:

The only negitive about this signing, Mat is smallish, and needs to bulk up some in the weight room!!! If he is as good as the Krug kid is, he should work out well for us, and should be paired with the biggest d-man as possible to protect his butt!!

  4. Paco 33 says:

Bodie is very smart, good at both ends, and was a rock for a Union team that was as mentally tough as they were talented. However, he’s 24 and just not going to get that much bigger. That said, it looks like we’re doing a good job of signing undrafted, college players to give us the organizational depth we’re missing by trading draft picks.

Size is just a computation for force.

    force equals mass times acceleration

if you lack mass you need acceleration to make up the difference. And acceleration is not speed. Its how fast you can get your body going .

case in point zuccarello. Not fast but can accelerate which makes up for his lack of mass

are you saying that two players moving towards each other at a constant velocity (no acceleration) will collide with no force? or are you just making a classical physics metaphor 🙂

Second coming of Matt Gilroy…calm down everyone. He will be an AHLer.

  7. Frank Cerbone says:

    Just what the Rangers need.

Bodie is a smallish, finesse, offensive defenseman
Brady Skjei is a big, finesse defensive defenseman

Conner is a journeyman, AHL type who will be 25 at midpoint next season. He plays the left side.

Which one replaces McDonough, Staal, Moore on the left side?

Rangers still need physical players both on offense, defense.

Right now McIlrath & Miller are just about all Rangers have in the way of physical prospects in the AHL.

Why are you worrying about who replaces McDonagh? That player is 12 years old right now.
