Mats Zuccarello wins Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award

April 8, 2014, by

Just prior to tonight’s puck drop with Carolina, the Rangers held a ceremony to announce the winner of the Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award.┬áThe Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award has been presented each season since 1987-88 to the Rangers player who goes above and beyond the normal call of duty, and is named in honor of paralyzed New York City police officer Steven McDonald.

This year’s winner was Mats Zuccarello, who has been the backbone of this team offensively and a bit of a troublemaker when he doesn’t have the puck. Former captain Ryan Callahan had won the award four of the previous five years.

No knock on Zucc, but McDonagh would have been my choice. He’s taken an absolute beating and still has played Norris-worthy hockey all season.

Feel like an MVP player like Mac Truck is hurt in what this award represents.

Yes Mac gives an effort we wish every player would, but he is more an MVP then an extra effort guy.

Zucc is perfect choice for this award…chips are against him from the minute he steps on the ice due to his size and because of his effort and fearless way he plays (and unreal puck skill) he gets it done.

I think the fans got this one correct.

Congarts to Zucc, this little guy has heart!
