Rangers recall J.T. Miller

The Rangers have recalled forward J.T. Miller to the NHL. Miller was almost called up on Monday as an emergency replacement, but this call up is for real, and will count as one of the four post-trade deadline call ups allowed for the club. Miller will –hopefully– slide into the top-nine, with Chris Kreider out at least a month with a hand injury.┬áIn 28 games with the Rangers, Miller has a line of 3-3-6, including a line of 1-1-2 in his most recent three game stint post-Olympics. In that stint, many (admittedly, myself included) believed Miller had taken that next step and that he was ready for The Show. This is his chance to prove it.

Miller, from an offensive perspective, I think can hold his own and adequately fill the hole left by Kreider’s injury.

Miller has a similar tenacity, and can work the boards and forecheck well. We know he can score and can see the ice well enough. I think he’s definitely the ideal plug in this situation.

While he’ll continue to need some work, this shouldn’t be a major liability for the team.

And with the playoffs around the corner, I’m sure Miller will play inspires hockey as this is his chance to make an impact and prove he belongs. If he does that, he can earn himself some playoff time.

I’d go with the following lines tonight:

    Hagelin – Stepan – Nash
    Pouliot- Richards – MSL
    Miller- Brassard – Zuccarello
    Moore – Boyle – Dorsett

    • Gary says:

Not bad Chris. Time for JT to put the experience he’s had together now and be more instinctive, hopefully.

  3. Walt says:

Sorry that Chris got hurt, now it’s JT’s chance to show his stuff big time!!

Unlike Chris’s moves, I’d move Hags up, and slot JT with BR & MSL. This way we have a little size, someone who does a good job along the boards, and can close, and or dish out, bring a natural centerman first.

  4. Ray says:

According to Andrew Gross, AV has said that Nash will take Kreider’s spot as first LW with MSL playing on the right. The other lines are unspecified.

    • Chris F says:

Ok, with that in mind then:

      Nash-Stepan-MSL
      Pouliot – Richards – Zuccarello
      Hagelin – Brassard – Miller
      Moore – Boyle – Dorsett

      • Evan M says:

I’d keep Pouliot-Brass-Zucc together and just move the line up… but maybe you’re right and they’ll bring out the best in BR.

Hags-Rich-Miller might be good. Strong on the forecheck with Miller and Hags at least.

  5. SalMerc says:

Needs to get MSL some big scoring chances. This injury may actually liven up MSL and Richards and allow Miller to show value while playing more than 10 minutes a game. Fourth line above should never take a faceoff in the offensive zone.

  6. Chris F says:

Rangers are reporting Kreider will be out at least 5 games. Still evaluating whether or not he will need surgery.

Apparently he was injured against Columbus.

    • Rangers Fan in Boston says:

Right. The 5 games just means he’s not going on the 4 game road trip after tonight. It looks like the Rangers will play this one close to the vest, but it seems pretty clear it’s a long term injury.
