Game 70: Senators vs. Rangers

Just when you think the Rangers have righted the ship, a goalie like Antii Niemi steals one for the opposition, and the Rangers are again left without points. That comfy second-place cushion is gone, and the Rangers are barely in a playoff spot. The Flyers and Blue Jackets have two games in hand, and the Caps are breathing down the Blueshirts’ necks. The Rangers have the benefit of a weak schedule over the last 13 games, but they need points. That needs to begin tonight against Ottawa.

The Sens forechecking strategy is a bit complex, as they are a hybrid forechecking/lock team. When they are trailing or tied, they’ll send two or three guys after the puck in a 2-1-2 formation. When they are ahead though, they lock it up with a 1-1-3 forecheck, a variation of the 2-3 lock. They are an overload/zone defense team depending on puck location. On special teams, they run a standard umbrella power play, but run a hybrid PK (box, diamond, wedge+1) depending on puck location and opposition formation.

Ottawa is backed into a corner right now and with all the weapons they have should therefor not be taken lightly. It’s as much of a must win as NY has had all year but the Sens are not an automatic 2 points. This will take a total team effort to leave their building with a win. The Sens are in the bottom of the NHL in shots against per game. So AV should be preaching puck possession and limit time & space for Karlsson.

    • Rangers Fan in Boston says:

Taken lightly…that made me laugh a little. This team has no business taking anyone lightly.

  2. Leatherneckinlv says:

2-1 Ottawa in the 1st, I stand by my post earlier even though Nash scored.
Do you all really believe that talent alone is enough?
I am a Marine though a disabled Veteran now. Marines get the job done not with the best of equipment, they get it done because of Esprit DE Corps.
Rangers are this shiny team now with no backbone and fight in them save a few.
If you all agree that Zuke has been the best player then my past comment must stand true with you. Nash and Richards are all skill and no heart, add Staal to that group. I honestly think Staal will bolt after his contract expires, hence why he plays well in spurts but has no emotion.
When I consider he wears an “A” he has to be vigorous and show passion. I have never seen him when there is a dispute with the refs to be there fighting for his team…NEVER

  3. Leatherneckinlv says:

And now I hear St Louis is high maintenance. gloves dry, have his stick toweled by the trainer…measures his stick to the millimeter…Oh boy….he likes his space too to boot. What makes you that special Mr St Louis? Get rid of this terd of a prima donna.
I am a guy that likes a Lucic type over a Nash. A Callahan over a St Louis, a Barry Beck type over a Staal.

Best Rangers are Lundqvuist, McDonagh, John Moore, Mats Zuccarello, Derick Brassard, Brian Boyle, Derek Dorsett and Dom Moore. Chris Kreider is getting there as he matures as guys with heart.

  4. Leatherneckinlv says:

Why was Michalek’s goal not offside? The Ottawa player forced the Rranger players stick to put the puck back in the Ranger zone

    • "The Original" Rob says:

That was some bizarre s–t! Such a blatant offsides lol! Oh well, wasn’t the prettiest of wins, but I’m sure we can all agree that we’ll take the 2 points and run out of dodge!

      Grats to the “KING!”

  5. Rangers Fan in Boston says:

Quite the shooting % correction in this one.

  6. Chris F says:

What the hell did I just watch?

    Hen-rik! Hen-rik!

    • TxRanger says:

he let in four goals he had a pretty bad game

      • Chris A says:

Four goals in a game of shinny isn’t so bad.

Neither team decided to play any D tonight. Two points is two points though right now and that’s all that matters.

      • Chris F says:

Tx it was a shootout. No defense whatsoever. And Hank made some huge saves when Ottawa was trying to climb back into it.

Not to mention the main reason to chant his name: Hank is now the Rangers all time win leader.

        As I was saying, Hen-rik! Hen-rik!

        • Chris A says:

That stop Hank made on that two on none was pretty sharp.

        • TxRanger says:

Hank is the all-time wins leader now? Wow, I had no idea. Thanks for the tip.

Four goals against is shit, even if we won. Dude better get his shit together. He lucked out last night.

  7. Leatherneckinlv says:

    lol…a bizarre game
