Game 65: Lundqvist eyes Richter against Carolina

The Rangers need another two points against Carolina tonight. That much is a given. But there is another story happening here. Henrik Lundqvist notched win #300 against Detroit on Sunday, and he goes for Mike Richter’s Ranger-record #301 tonight. Hank and Richter are the only two goaltenders in Rangers history with 300 wins, and it is a lock that Hank will eventually pass Richter.

As for the opposition, since there is more to this game than the record, the Canes play a bit of a hybrid forechecking system. They play an aggressive 2-3 to start the game, but will switch to a trap late in the game with a lead. In the defensive zone , they run box + 1 system, which is a box setup in front with a player pressuring depending on the puck location. On special teams, the Canes run an umbrella powerplay and a hybrid  penalty kill (varies between the systems based on puck location).

Rangers Lineup:

Chris Kreider-Derek Stepan-Rick Nash
Carl Hagelin-Brad Richards-Martin St. Louis
Benoit Pouliot-Derick Brassard-Mats Zuccarello
Brian Boyle-Dominic Moore-Derek Dorsett

Ryan McDonagh-Dan Girardi
Marc Staal-Anton Stralman
John Moore-Kevin Klein

Henrik Lundqvist gets the start

I just want to beat a dead horse about how consistent hank is. He is the 5th fastest goalie to reach 300 (out of 29), doing so in his 560th game played. Jacques Plante was fastest doing it 528 games played.

But yet people still wanted to trade him earlier in the year.

      • Chris F says:

To be fair, Dave, the desire to trade Lundqvist wasn’t because we thought he was a bad goaltender, but rather as a realization that he is likely past his prime. He’s still great –though increasingly inconsistent. But he isn’t what he used to be and his contract is a long one for anyone not named Broduer. Hopefully he ages as well. But this was definitely a gamble signing by Sather.

With that said, I love me some King Henrik! Always will!

        • Dave says:

He had a rough start, but he’s been lights out (save for a few exceptions) for a while now.

          • Chris F says:

Yes, he’s been leaps and bounds better as of late. Hopefully he is proving all of us naysayers wrong.

The Boston/Philly weekend was really rough though.

            • Dave says:

Yea, he’s had some rough spots, but he’s been great in a time where they need him to be great. Hitting his stride at the right time.

We need the 2 points. The “trap” Carolina plays can give us fits if we fall behind. I look for St. Louis to notch his first as a NYR tonight.

I’m right there with you on St. Louis. It just feels like this is the one he gets on the board.

    • Dave says:

Yup, need the two points. Could also go for a regulation finish for Devs/Flyers.

    • Puck Luck @Centerman21 says:

I sure hope you’re right and we need Nash to be the force we acquired him to be. Maybe having a graybeard like MSL on the team scoring all over the puck will motivate him enough to step up. He was driving hard to the net Sunday against Det. He needs to drive to be effective. Marty St. Louis has that one timer he uses to score on the PP often. I hope he gets one like that on the PP. Stepan has been better so hopefully he really gets it going with Nash & Kreider so our top line scares teams. That line hasn’t done enough this year consistently. This is a game the Rangers must win. It’s a division opponent and one lesser in the standings with little hope of making the playoffs. Score 1st and score often. Keep the peddle to the floor.

I swear if someone blames Hank for that goal I’m gonna flip.

  4. Rangers Fan in Boston says:

Really need at least a point in this one. Would be disappointing if the Rangers just never show up at all in this one.

  5. Ray says:

Four losses in six games, four games of three goals or more, a coach who is trying to get Lundqvist the franchise record for wins. Not surprising the team loses sight of what they are playing for.
24 wins, 25 losses is not a good season with a bad patch. Lundqvist may be the greatest Ranger goalie of all time, but he is not the best Ranger goalie this year.

Strategy can be built up by the use of combinations to measure up to the opponents, with throwing opponents to death taking on new limits.
Overall, the game was just about everything I expected, and little more – it is a
fun play, with an engaging storyline and some
good use of technology. In ters or land, weather, ocean, wildlife,
    mood and feeling.
