Zuccarello out 3-4 weeks with broken hand

February 22, 2014, by

Despite earlier reports that the injury to Mats Zuccarello was not serious, the winger and Rangers leading scorer will be out 3-4 weeks with that broken hand. Considering the Olympic break doesn’t end until Thursday for the Rangers, Zuccarello will miss 2-3 weeks of games. That amounts to anywhere from 5-7 games. This is obviously a blow for the Rangers, as Zuccarello has been a huge asset to the team, and has been the backbone of his line with Derick Brassard and Benoit Pouliot.

The Rangers might not need to make a call up, depending on how well Derek Dorsett progresses from his broken leg. If they do need to make a call up, J.T. Miller would likely be the fill-in.

Yeah but is Dorsett gonna play on that 3rd line with Pouliot & Brassard? I was hoping the Rangers would trade Boyle to make room for Dorsett on the 4th line. Carcillo who’s playing the RW could move back to the left with Dorsett on his Right. I think they should give Kristo a look on that right line. He’s a Righty unlike Zuc who has been playing his off wing. Even Fasth has been having a good season tho he’s a lefty he has been playing real well in Hartford. I just hope Nash comes back with a vengence and goes on a scoring tear.

  2. Centerman21 says:

Unless Miller has learned to play D all of a sudden, I’d leave him in Hartford.

  3. FrankCerbone says:

At 24 & still struggling defensively, Kristo’s days with the Rangers are numbered.

Miller has 3rd line potential, needs the year at Hartford.

Lindberg doing OK; just needs to stay away from too many PM.

McIlrath & Skjei are 3d pairing defensemen at best. Can McIlrath beat out Klein or Stralman? No.

Can Skjei beat out Moore? No way ever. 7 pts in 29 gms for a finesse defensive defenseman explains why a 1st rd pick was insane by Clark

Boo Nieves is done. A scoring forward with 2 goals at Michigan this season justifies why so many Ranger followers wondered why Clark picked him in the 2nd rd.

Allen, 24 yrs old, still struggling in Hartford and OLDER THAN DEL ZOTTO is not going to beat out Moore either.

With the 27th ranked farm system in the NHL, Rangers need to fire Clark.

All the Rangers want for McIlrath is to be a 3rd pairing defenseman. His skating can and will improve enough for him to crack an NHL lineup. Wether it’s the Rangers or anther team. Kristo was just acquired by the Rangers this past summer. He’s an offensive player. A shooter in fact! He will also crack a lineup somewhere in the NHL someday.
Nieves isn’t done at all. He battled injuries all season long and had a tough time because of it. I’d look towards his season last year. He has 2nd line Centerman written all over him. If I were Sather I’d trade up and get in on one of this years top 5 picks. I agree the Rangers need to add a young franchise type player. A kid that can hang in the NHL next season.

What’s your reference for Kristo struggling defensively? And he’s 23.

  4. Centerman21 says:

I also think this injury to Zuccarello will force Sathers hand at the deadline. I still think they can get Stewart for a decent deal. St Louis felt they overpaid him and now he isn’t living up to that contract playing on their 4th line. He could play on our 4th line this year for a Cup run and then move up in the lineup next season.

  5. JoeS. says:

Great tournament, the Olympics! Now back to reality and one of our stars hurt for 5-7 games. Sorry, I just don’t think it is worth it!

  6. AD says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if Jespar Fast was called up.

  7. FrankCerbone says:

Correction-Kristo won’t be 24 til June; maybe we should wait til he’s 30 before writing him off as a prospect.

Allen is 24 & older than Del Zotto-Allen is he going to beat out Moore or Skjei?

Rangers need a young right handed defenseman that has top 4 potential….McIlRath is not that guy. Rangers can not just pass on this group of right handed defensemen that are available in the 2014 draft.

I’m not trying to pick on you/bully you Frank but I can’t help but scream BS to 95% of what you say. Please help me to understand where your statements come from.

You said Kristo is struggling defensively. Where is this coming from? The same thing with Connor Allen. You said he is struggling in Hartoford. In what aspect is he struggling?
